I agree, but in this case the character itself is quite detailed/complex, so I wanted to make the icon look as much like the character as possible, I suppose.

Yeah, but pixel art is interesting as it is unavoidable that we will need to focus on the most important details. No surprise that so many sprites out there are pretty chibi and simplified.
