The angle is definatly what seperates the two shots. Normally i'm not a big fan of this kind of angles, but it actually looks pretty good in this shot, it brings out the subject very well, and creates a nice contrast to go with it as well.

Fungi! Ferns! The tilt of the shot is nice, looks like it's from the perspective of a gnome clibing up the trunk.
