Good stuff! I'm not very familiar with oils although I've thought about getting started with them. Wasn't really aware you could do values as underpainting that well. Is the aim to just give some idea how the values are gonna look? I was under the impressions oils cover the previous layers fairly well. Loving it

samburley In reply to Kvenh [2011-11-11 22:31:49 +0000 UTC]

If you glaze in thin enough layers, the colors will shift with very little change to the value. I ended up going pretty opaque is most areas, but that's the theory.

This reminds me simultaneously of some of the Dinotopia illustrations, and of the cover of a scifi book floating around here somewhere -- Anne Mccaffrey's Freedom's Landing (this one ) and... all of those are things that I love.

(Not to mention, wow -- a dragon, rocky columns reaching for the sky, a very awesome colour scheme, and a brilliant composition -- I can never lay things out looking this cool....!)

This is such an inspiration for me.

They're fun for sure. Take a look at Lars Grant-West and Todd Lockwood for some of the best dragons in fantasy. Each of them has a keen understanding of animal anatomy and it shows in their dragon designs.

This is absolutely gorgeous. How on earth did you accomplish those cloud wisps or mists from the waterfalls. I have experience with acrylics, but not oils, so I'm not sure how difficult they handle, but the realism achieved in this piece is just mind numbing. The perspective, the colors, the atmosphere, all perfect! Fantastic job!! :3

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

samburley In reply to OliviaRampaige [2011-11-11 14:03:03 +0000 UTC]

I've actually been using fast-drying oils for the most part, so it's really not too far off from acrylics. The clouds were repainted in dozens of layers until they looked right to me, usually wet into wet until that layer dried.

Ah, that's awesome. Thanks for sharing the info. I've been dying to try oils recently, but haven't had the time yet. :3
