this has to be the best painting i came across on my more from deviantart spelunking inspiration session. Beautiful ambient lighting & subsurface + rayleigh scattering & foliage & pulsing waves of energy. I also like the erosion on the distant landscape. Finally the technique u used for these trees will be huge inspiration for my practice with making low poly trees ^^

Thank you! I'd like to translate what I do digitally onto canvas but can't decide whether to paint in oils or acrylics, not sure which of these would suit my style more.

SamFoote In reply to runique [2011-09-01 06:13:15 +0000 UTC]

Oils and Acrylics work very differently from each other. If you like to work fast and get stuff done then acrylics. BUT, one thing I don't like about acrylics is that they tend to shift in tone as they dry. I prefer oil, I like to keep my paint wet for at least a full day, on the painting itself, so that I can blend to my hearts content. If you like to ponder while you paint, oils. I can adjust the drying time of oils, using mediums, to be workable for minutes, hours, days or weeks. But, with oils you have to let things dry thoroughly before starting the next layer, otherwise you might just end up mixing mudd. This can really suck, so I tend to have allot of paintings going at once. One of my Oil paintings almost allways has no less than 3 layers, and often, many more.

I would suggest, as this is what I did when starting out, is too buy Black and White shades, in both oils, and acrylic, that way your investment is small, and you can experiment and see which you prefer. You can create a pretty wonderful painting/under-painting in just black and white, and then colorize it latter if you wish.

Thanks for the great advice, much appreciated! I will give the black & white painting thing a try as you suggest. When I paint digitally I like to use a lot of blending, so I suspect I will prefer oils. What puts me off is the smell. I will be painting in the house (I don't have access to a studio) so I worry about the house smelling constantly of oil paint. Is there anything which can be added to the oils to reduce the smell? I'm guessing speeding up the drying time will help, what do you add to your oils to reduce the worakable time to minutes or hours?

SamFoote In reply to runique [2011-09-02 05:10:41 +0000 UTC]

To dry your paint quickly, try cobalt, or Japan drier. Very easy to find. Also, some mediums will do the trick as well, such as boiled linseed for example. Just be careful, a little goes a loooooooooong way! As for the smell,,,I use Windsor and Newton Oil paint. It has a good body,ie, it's thick, and it has very little smell to it at all. I paint all day in a very hot room (my bedroom) and I hardly notice any scent at all,,,,also, use OMS, Odorless Mineral Spirits to clean up, and for thinning mediums, it to has very little smell.

Acrylics dry very fast, so in their case you can use an extender to slow their drying.

Having seen your digital art, and you being a master of detail, and color subtlety, I suggest you look around for some videos by an artist named Alexei Antonov (just Google him). he teaches the Flemish technique of oil painting, which I think would suit your style of working. IMHO, he is probably one of the greatest technical painters the world has ever known! On the surface, the process may seem too involved, but I assure you, having been practicing this method my self lately, that it is a very very easy way to paint with oils. Not fast,,,,but boy, do you get great results!!! I have a little painting I have been practicing this with, and trust me, It blow's all my other work away when it comes too technical splendor. This piece [link] I did years ago is similar in technique, I did an under-painting for this and then colored it. But, the Flemish method is so much more powerful a tool, and the results much better! Can't wait to show you the new Flemish one,,,but I have a ways to go on it.,,,,,,,but in the end, though I love to doddle with detail, Finger Painting is my true love,,,,ie [link]

I hope this helps you out! If you should have any other questions in the future, feel free to ask! Whew,,,That was the longest post I've ever deviated!

Thanks for such a wonderful and detailed response, it is really helpful. Your Father Failure painting really caught my eye when I browsed your gallery and now I know why. I love your finger paintings too, but it was the detail and blending in this painting which really appealed, as well as the wonderful perspective. I will definitely check out Alexi Antonov's work. Sounds like I should give those Winsor & Newton paints a try if the smell isn't too bad. I'm assuming it's best to keep away from the quick drying and water mixable paint ranges they do and stick to their regular Artists Oils?

SamFoote In reply to runique [2011-09-04 05:55:03 +0000 UTC]

Actually, I started painting first with the water mixable oils, and they work very well. I latter switch to the regular oil paint line (artists) for two reasons. One, I wanted to have the flexibility to explore the vast assortment of mediums available to regular oils. and second, because I wanted more bang for my buck. The regular line from W&N are available in 200milliters tubes. That allowed me more freedom to paint impasto, or, really thick. Another advantage I've found the the artist oil's, or regular oils, is that they are usually thicker, which is good if you care to use mediums to paint. Trust me, the way you like to work will require that you use mediums. This will take a bit of trial and error on your part, finding ones that give the paint the qualities you require. When you get to that stage with your experimentation, I am more than happy to lend advice, as I have literally experimented with countless formulas. However, there is a vast repository of subject matter related to that subject through out the web.

I have quite a few very nice digital pieces myself, and I just love Corel, and Photoshop, but much of that work is client work, Not on DA, for logos and such. Digital painting does save a lot of the frustration when creating art, a main benefit being that you don't have any clean up when your done, and more importantly you also don't have to photograph it since it is already in the computer, but, nothing compares to the satisfaction I get from working with the tangible! Mixing paint feels like sorcery!

Feel free to hit me up for advice anytime!

Sam

Thanks Sam, lots of wonderful advice once again, it's very helpful. I'll start with the regular W&N paints and see how I get on. I do have one last question for now (promise) - what surface would you recommend painting on for a beginner - canvas, board or something else?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SamFoote In reply to runique [2011-09-07 05:16:50 +0000 UTC]

Hard to say, since I paint on everything I can get my hands on, paper,mat-board,canvas,canvas panels, Masonite etc. I've done allot of work on Masonite, which is inexpensive and very smooth, but you should gesso it before you go to work on it. My all time favorite surface is #503 Caravaggio Canvas. It is fantastic,,,smoother than most linen, but I have a somewhat complicated process I go through to prep it. Unfortunately though, you have to order 503 Caravaggio Canvas in large rolls. Caravaggio has a sample book of all of their canvas and linen for about $5 which I highly recommend. It will give you some idea what types of cloth surfaces are out there, and you can paint on the samples to see which you like.

Of course, all of these surfaces work very differently from each other, with some (masonite, paper) having different absorbances. Not sure which would be easiest to work on for a beginner but probably canvas. Your local art store will have all kinds of different supports, I suggest you buy one small one of different types and see which you like.

I'm actually thinking its my all time favourite ever painting/work of art!!! I love everything about it. I love that its oils you've used as they are my favourite medium, I love that pretty much every colour of the rainbow has been used but it works perfectly. I like how you can see really close up details like the individual plants and flowers in the forground and each whisper of paint to make the trees and if u look far away its just a magical landscape. It has movement and perspective. The leaves on the trees look 3D... and yet it doesnt make sense because its not a real landscape its like a dream. Its superb!!

In short I LOVE it!!!

Sorry It took me awhile to get back to you sarahgee, just been very busy, and wanted to give my response to your comments proper consideration!

I can't tell you how overwhelmed I am by your reaction to my work, set in particular, and that there is no way I can communicate my appreciation in words,,,,but thank you non the less, and that I have another idea in mind!!! I don't as of right now have prints available, and for quality control, have decided against using the DA printing service, but I do happen to have a printable file for this piece, which well exceeds the quality of the one you see here! The original painting is 16"x20" but I have a high resolution digital file measuring double it's original size equaling 24"x30" inches. I myself have not printed this piece on a larger scale, but, I am very curious to know how it might turn out.

I welcome you to the use of this file as a test case! You can then use it at your local print shop to make your own print, at any size, and any support, IE, canvas, paper, etc that you would like! This will save you the costs of shipping, or profiteering , that would be better used for whatever the price of print will be too be made locally, which shouldn't be that much. The file size is 27.2mb, but I can reduce that a bit if need be with out too much quality loss. I don't ask for any compensation, only that this master file, which will one day be my bread and butter, does not fall out of your hands once your done with it, that is all. If you have it done on canvas for example, the shop will likely even offer to have it mounted on stretcher bars for you. Then you will have a very close approximation of the original painting, minus the texture of the paint itself of course.

I've learned over the years, that if I can't figure out how to make a living as an artist, then I might as well make others happy with my art. This I'm finding out, especially of late, is the best way to get paid!

Here is my email address samuelfoote@hotmail.com ,,,,Send me yours to this account, and I will send you this SET file asap. Just check to see what the file size limitations for your email account are, and let me know, (hotmails limits are 27mb BTW)
I hope this will satisfy your request for a print

Thanks again Sarah
