Description Woo, here's the tutorial!

Again, there are other ways to make this, these are just my methods!

In total this was a solid week's work, but spread out over several months around other things I had to do. Apart from the plastics, none of these materials or the tools used are hard to come by or expensive, and the casting plastic was not as horrible as expected.

Materials used:
- 8mm thick sheet of a light type of wood
- thin nylon thread
- wood glue
- thin, sturdy cardboard
- fun foam
- multi pupose glue
- wall filler (bought as paste in tube, but can also be bought as a powder, which lets you control its thickness for a smoother finish - will be using this for most layers)
- water clear polyester casting resin + dye
- tin foil
- PVA glue
- long wooden dowel, 20mm diameter (through preferably same width as the staff head)
- primer paint
- brass spray paint
- clear spray paint
- 1mm clear HIPS plastic sheet
- super glue
- transparent blue glass paint

The link to the pattern: [link]
It is not perfect, and needs to be adjusted while you work; the lower part where it connects to the staff is not entirely symmetrical.

Fai D. Flowright and his staff are from Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle by Clamp.

Normally I would agree, except with the softest kind, as this is. I think it's mostly pine; all the layers are soft enough that they don't chip much. In this case I didn't need to do much sanding anyway, it was pretty easy to saw the shape right in one go! But yeah, my first though was not polite when I saw that it was more or less my only option at the shop!

Wow, you're staff came out looking really gorgeous. This is a beautiful cosplay, you pulled it off perfectly~
If you have time would you mind making a tutorial for the resin? I would love to try your technique to make Materia for a Final Fantasy VII cosplay.

Thank you!
There's not much point in making a tutorial for the resin, because the materials usually come with instructions and there are plenty tutorials on the internet.
Don't know how well it would work for materia though! It's easy to cast half-round ones like these gems, but making completely round ones would be very difficult I think (but I know little ). It might be easier to get clear plastic balls like these [link] (but without the loop thingy) and paint them on the inside with transparent glass paint (like the floating gem for my staff). Then they'd still be shiny on the outside.
I've been thinking about how to make materia for a future costume for a while now too.

Wow, that's amazing. I always loved the design of Fai's staff, and I didn't think I'd ever see anyone get it right in real life. Kudos!

Wow I love the "floating" jewel in the middle. The only thing I think that could have made it better would be if that jewel was also made out of resin but I understand that it would be pretty difficult to find a mold for it.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

samhawkeye In reply to MorningGirl [2011-05-19 19:52:51 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!
I did think of casting one from resin, but that would have involved making a two-part mould myself (which would be tricky!) more resin, which is expensive, and more trouble attaching it to the wires to make it float, so I went for the cheaper, easier, but bit less pretty method. Maybe next time, if I make another and have more time/money.

would I be able to buy this from you? :3 or would you be able to make a new one? I really need one in 6 months, or a year, because in 8 days in my Anime Convention, but I won't be able to go as Fai this year, I am going as Sasuke as it is :3

I'm thinking of maybe selling it, but only for pick-up at London MCM Expo. Shipping it would be difficult and very expensive because it is quite large. :\

This is an incredible tutorial! Can't tell you how glad I am to see it up here, the final prop is amazing. Just out of curiosity, do you know exactly what brand of resin you got? And what dye? Sorry for pestering, but I've been having a lot of difficulty with some of the resin/dye brands I've bought recently.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

samhawkeye In reply to Ruet-Beer [2011-05-09 09:17:12 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!
The resin I used is East Coast Fibreglass Supplies Water Clear Polyseter Casting Resin, and the dye is transparent blue dye from the same company. If you live in the UK they deliver very quickly, but I don't know beyond that. This is the first time I've used polyester resin, so don't really have any more advice!

Ruet-Beer In reply to samhawkeye [2011-05-11 03:14:26 +0000 UTC]

No problem at all! Looks like it might be difficult for me to get it sent into the US from the UK but I've found a good alternative, and I think though the site I found a similar dye. For your first try at it you did a wonderful job!
