Description I tried to portray Cthulhu not as a creature, but as the vessel of some awesome cosmic entity.

I tried to capture the Dunsanian mystic atmosphere of "Dreamquest of Unknown Kadath" mixed with the objective view of "At The Mountains of Madness."

" ...a gigantic thing "miles high" which walked or lumbered about."

It can´t be merely a creature of flesh and bone, but something alien that extends to more than one reality, and which draws its power from some distant cosmic source.
Like what a 2-dimensional creature living in a 2-dimensional world would see if we sticked our 3-dimensional finger into their world.

" ...the mountainous monstrosity flopped down the slimy stones and hesitated, floundering at the edge of the water."
" ...great Cthulhu slid greasily into the water and began to pursue with vast wave-raising strokes of cosmic potency."

It seems like a gigantic mass gliding about, like an overgrown Shoggoth.

I prefer this cosmic horror better than the hairless King Kong with the octupus head.

The Ominous End we all deserve! Excellent! Your Deep Ones are very batrachian, I like it. Cthulhu is nice and alien and inhuman (I don't like biceps on Cthulhu, far too human). Although Lovecraft said "simultaneous pictures of an octopus, a dragon, and a human caricature" I think he meant a very distorted, very alien caricature. Even the Shoggoth in the background is highly disturbing.

I must say that I agree with your preferences!  Lovecraftian's monsters should not be humanoid nor a combination of a bat, an octopus and a man: They should be like a nightmare, something so horrible and strange that you can't define not understand.

A great work!

Wonderful...and the image is paralleled (as much as their budget would allow) in the concluding scenes of the 2007 movie CTHULHU.

Really really enjoy your interpretation here, nailed it. "Like what a 2-dimensional creature living in a 2-dimensional world would see if we sticked our 3-dimensional finger into their world."... this is what defines the best of Lovecraft's horrors, very very well done. Love it!

I always assumed that the creature was supposed to be indescribable and that all depictions of Chthulhu were based upon the idol of him.

I haven't read much of the story but im guessing these fish headed things are the deep ones right?

Also, I always liked the classic dragon-man-octopus design but this interpretation of cthulhu is really cool as well as somewhat more terrifying...

Yes, deep ones.

In the first appearance of Cthulhu in Lovecraft´s stories, it actually is the classic giant dragon octopus, so there is credit to that. But I believe he later realized that a mysterious cosmic being fitted better in the kind of horror he was trying to achieve.

Anyway, thank you.

And yes, cosmic horror wins over hairless KK with octopus head any day!

Love the fact that when a small thumbnail Cthulhu looks like an odd mountain. You nailed the (un)natural force aspect of the cosmic horror.

Cthulhu NAFL Fhtagn, as expressed in one short story "THE RETURN OF HASTUR".
Cthulhu no longer sleeps.
Cthulhu & Hastur fight it out on a lawn near the Aylesburg Pike. Hastur has metastized into a human host and the vastly bloated bulk is able to pound & pummel his half-bro and arch-enemy in full view of wretches that should have never seen such a sight !

Awesome interpretation of Cthulhu, much more "god-creature from another cycle of life and matter" than the usual rubber-suit octopus dragon

I wonder why you choose hte Deep Ones to be pictured with Cthulhu instead of the Cthulhu spawn. Shouldn't the Deep Ones be pictured with Father Dagon? Still...this is awesome, and I love it

He recruited the Deep Ones to help, the spawn are coming afterwards.

Nah, you're right. I only chose the Deep Ones because they're more well-known, and look better.

And thanks.

I suppose that is true. Cthulhu Spawn just kind of look like mini cthulhus. Having said that, the Deep Ones DO worship Cthulhu, along with Father Dagon and Mother Hydra.

You are welcome

Great work BTW! I've often contemplated what that would look like...... It would simply just be... as though it had unfolded in the center in front of us. MY thoughts anyway.

Samize In reply to Shang-Tsung-Fi [2013-06-17 09:16:48 +0000 UTC]

Yea, I often contemplate such things too. Imagine that this being with higher dimensions (which would be impossible for us to visualize completely) does just unfold from the center, but its unimaginable form could appear to us as an unfolding gigantic blob of flesh and whirling tentacles. Or it could just appear as a growing sphere, but that wouldn't be very interesting. I really like to imagine such things.
