Especially for Xan. I played BG1 last week again, I picked up Xan... and regret not to take Edwin instead with me. ^^

har'dallais(or how ever you really spell his name) always runs up in the front lines and he usually dodges most attacks but when he gets hit he's ether half dead or dead thankfully i have Jaheira and Anomin to raise him from the dead

Of COURSE he goes into melee, it's where he belongs, if he dies, it's because you didn't protect him properly. "Judge me by my HP, do you? Hmm? Hmm. And well you should not. For my ally is the Arcane Magic, and a powerful ally it is."
If anyone of you is interested in how to keep arcane characters alive, try the Bioware.com forums (section Baldur's Gate II) or insist on my knowledge.
Of course, this is an awesome picture nevertheless. Especially I like the way how two thirds of the group decide that this battle is too stupid for their tastes and watch their partners die in their neverending struggle to save their spells for the 'Real Battles'.

I've also played Xan as a melee combatant. It's because of my main strategy a'la Soviets ("now everybody draws his sword and HURRAAAAAAA!!!!!!!"

Love everything about this pic too, like the faux-fearsome dragon and the chibi Sammi (if that be the Bhaalspawn charrie's name; my foggy head might have some trouble recallin' that. 
Above all, I like how Yoshimo and Jaheira sound a lot like themselves, even if not perfectly so. I can imagine both of them saying their lines.

Heh, I once played through a good half of SoA with Xan as the only melee combatant in the party... The only reason that party didn't get horribly massacred within the first couple chapters was because my main character was a summoning-happy sorcerer. XD

Hey I've played through it like that too. And the only reason MY party survived was because I was CG and as such had two Cure Light Wounds as special abilities. And I stood behind Xan. And healed him once he got hit. Then had him run off once he was hurt too bad. And then...it was Nahal's Reckless Dweomer time...MAN, I love being a wild mage.

You know, you could give them RANGED WEAPONS so they don't do that. Xan, as an elf, should be bow-proficient, and Haery should be able to use shortbows, I think.

Xan, as a mage, cannot use bows.
And Harris can use shortbows, but he's not proficient. Spent all his damn slots on two-weapon fighting before he joined the party.
Besides, they both have SIGNATURE WEAPONS. Having Harris fight without Chaos and Entropy is just as blasphemous as having Xan fight without his damn Moonblade. They're part of their CHARACTERS, man, their CHARACTERS.

If you don't like them to attack without any issued order, just change their script. But Haer'Dalis should really wield some other weapons.
In the beginning Belm and Kundane, later (once he gets UAI) Scarlet Ninja-To and Belm.
Chaos is good, but usually I only use it against opponents that I cannot really kill HP-wise.

I gave him proficiency in flails and he's currently wielding the Blade of Roses +3 and the Flail of Ages +4 (I'm in ToB right now)

^_^; I'm going to try out this mod that lets you upgrade Haer'Dalis weapons in the underdark so I can get more use out of them.

Hm, I'm sure you've got better things to do than listen to the thousands of tips and go through nearly as many calculations of this BG2 geek. I'll still advice you to put a left-hand weapon (one with a passive bonus) into the left hand. (Crom Faeyr, Defender of Easthaven, the Equalizer, Belm, Kundane, Scarlet Ninja-To... These are all pretty good. (especially the last three) )
Seeing that you're already in ToB you should either have collected or missed my suggestions already.
Oh, and in any case, do not upgrade FoA any further. Immunity to Improved Haste sucks (although you probably know that already).

XD last time I fought Firkragg (sp?) Nalia managed to land the killing blow with whatever weapon she was using. Damn near made me keep her for the rest of the game, but she was the only npc I wasn't planing to be permanent and was in my temp npc for quest placeholder spot so I ended up having to kick her out for Valygar to do the planar sphere quest.
Was playing a male pc romancing Aerie (I get bored and sometimes play a male pc though I usually play female but I was sick of Anomen (XD I do actually like him, its just the lack of choice, didn't have the Xan BG2 mod at the times, and the Adjantis BG2 mod doesn't continue into TOB. Aerie is actually the only npc I've actually finished the bg2 and tob romance entirely with, also redeemed Sarevok in the same playthrough, had Adjantis in my party but as he has no TOB content he got booted... XD should have just kept him in as silent though didn't realize until to late that I could have at least kept him around to use the upgraded carosymr (sp?)
And wow I have no idea where I was going with this except Nalia killed that evil red dragon with a short sword... ^_^; (she had run out of magic and arrows)

^^ yeah...didn't think about it til after about the 500th time Harris died and the 100th time I had to restart cause Xan died (I dont wanna risk that glitch thing that ends a romance when someone dies, so I just restart. Actually, I just restart whenever Harris dies too, because his fling with Aerie is just too damn cute to risk negating.)

I haven't played any Haer'Dalis romance mod yet, but this is what [link] has to say to the normal game.
"Imprisonment or Petrification of the romance character will immediately terminate that romance. To restore it, simply reset the romance status to active using either ShadowKeeper ("Global Variables" tab) or the following console command: CLUAConsole:SetGlobal("JaheiraRomanceActive","GLOBAL",2)
'Chunking' (death beyond resurrection) will also terminate a romance, but the character will be unavailable, so this does not matter. Ordinary death (=grey portrait), followed by timely (within three days) resurrection of the romance character, will not end the romance; no action is required in this case."

yeah, the same thing happened ALL the time with me (but I had Edwin as the wizard). So I guess Haer'Dalis is just suicidal or extremely stupid.
The only thing more annoying than Haer'Dalis dying all the time was when he'd strike up a conversation with you when you're in the middle of a battle.
He actually started a conversation with me just as I was fighting with Firkragg T__T
