Description

Something out of my usual... style content.

I was looking up the Lucky Cat (Maneki-neko) on wikipedia and read up some of the folk legends that go with it...
And I was like: I SHOULD MAKE A MANGA OUT OF THAT. AND IT WILL BE KAWAII. fuckyeah.

And so I doodled this super typical shoujo-ish cover thang. Whether or not I actually do a comic will depend on how much I finish up on other shiz first.

The manga takes place during the edo era and the basic plot for the story is...
A poor young man named Unsei owns a tea shop that hardly gets any customers. He is broke and close and selling it, when one day, a starving cat walks in. He feeds the cat and lets it stay for the night. When he wakes up the next day and open the shops, the cat sits on the front window and beckons to people who pass by. Business begins to increase, but the man notices that customers only come in when the cat is around (as it comes and goes as it pleases). One night, he locks up all the doors in the shop and watches the cat as it falls asleep. At the stroke of midnight, the cat suddenly transforms into a girl, who reveals herself to be a deity of prosperity and fortune. From there, A SUPER CLICHE ANIMU ROMANCE BEGINS.

Naw but I thought it'd be cute. Not highly original (because I was totally inspired by animes like Spice and Wolf, Fruits Basket and Kami-Chu!) but I guess this makes it a parody manga then. And 'cause I'm a weabooooo totes.

Some of the characters will be...

- Unsei (just your average human, around 24 years old). He's seemingly the most unlucky fellow you'll ever meet. The tea shop belonged to his parents, who passed it onto him after they died from sickness. Aside from having bad business at his tea shop, he's also terrible with money and often gets scammed, is prone to injury and getting lost. His possibly only redeeming talent is for cooking, but somehow he'll often end up burning the food or dropping it. Although his fortune changes when he meets Maneko, his luck hardly does, and he still ends up in both silly and dangerous situations. He has a good heart, but most of his good deeds usually go unnoticed or backfire on him too.

- Maneko (who's name is just Maneki-neko squished into one), a lucky cat deity. Although seemingly benevolent, Maneko can actually be very greedy and scheming, always plotting the best ways to make money and do business. She is extremely picky over who she chooses to help, and doesn't always help the main character whenever he needs her either. She is also picky over the foods she eats, and forces Unsei to always cook fine meals for her with expensive ingredients. By day, she takes the form of a beige, brown-spotted cat. She loves napping, and avoiding physical activity. She hates the rain and going into the wild.

- Nagare, a kappa, who looks like a bishonen (half naked with long, dripping wet hair all the time) during nighttime. When the main guy comes to his river home, the kappa attempts to drown him (but Maneko saves him). In the scuffle, Kappa looses the water on his lilypad hat, rendering him powerless. Unsei feels sorry for him and refills his water, which makes the kappa eternally loyal and swear to serve him. The kappa follows him back to the shop and resides in a basin of water and lives off cucumbers. He'll probably be gay and see Maneko as his rival. By day, he takes the form of an actual kappa (so small, amphibious and green.)

- Kinomi, a tanuki, who acts like a genki girl (a chubby brunette, possibly an alcoholic). While looking for mushrooms on a nearby mountain, Unsei and Maneko get lost and encounter the tanuki. She offers to give them directions in exchange for stealing some sake from a group of swordsman camping nearby. After successfully retrieving the sake, the tanuki happily befriends Unsei and joins them back to the city. She is much friendlier, humbler and helpful than Maneko, but doesn't like staying in the city for too long because she prefers nature. The tanuki also loves making inappropriate jokes and doing things to embarrass the others. By day, she looks like a fluffy raccoon dog.

I'll come up with names for them all later... But yes. Silliness that will probably never be.

I'd read that story~

Though until I read "swordsmen" I thought it was taking place in modern day, which could make for more funny interactions with such beings.

Japanese knowledge go!

Her kimono is on backwards! When wearing a kimono you always wear it left over right. So when you look at it, it makes a 'y' shape. The only time you wear it the other way (how it looks now) is when you're dead. No, really! It's worn like that for your funeral.

This is a common mistake in America and the west because women always wore dresses and not suits, so when we did get the right to wear pants, the fashion industry reversed the buttons for women's cloths making it right over left. (Damn American sexism...)

XD That was actually intetional. I originally made it the other way, but changed it because she's a spirit and technically... dead.

Oh, good! Sorry if I came across a tad pretentious. It's hard to give out info on the internet with out looking like a douche.

P.S I love your work! And I'm excited for the new project!
