Fafnir was built as the UEG's endgame strategy in the First Solar War. While dubbed by some as a "Mobile Space Fortress," this belies the usefulness of a starship almost half the size of a space colony and carrying the largest beam weapon known to man for generations. Numerous upgrades and refits have only made Fafnir deadlier, she can destroy entire fleets with her primary weapon, crack small moons open and burn off significant portions of a planet's atmosphere. This is precisely what was done to the Procrustean homeworld and a dozen others that earned the special ire of the Union.

Fafnir was never meant to enter atmospheres and so her wings instead house the primary shield emitters and a number of smaller weapon ports. The ship is so large that internally, it functions much like a city but with strict military controls. It is considered the highest honor in the fleet to serve on board the flagship, a prize given only to those who have proven their loyalty to the Earth and never bestowed upon aliens or other non-humans. It is also the safest posting in the Union. After the Second Solar War, the only time Fafnir was considered to be in real danger was at the Battle of the Sirian Gate but she was hardly alone in that regard when faced with the most powerful weapons in the Saurian Empire's arsenal. Of course this is at least partly due to Fafnir not being deployed to unknown situations. The Union would never risk the flagship without first making a full threat assessment. Fafnir is also the first to be upgraded with new technologies once they have been proven on prototypes.

Any admiral would love to command Fafnir but that is a right reserved for the chosen representatives of the Princeps and only as the situation demands. When not on a special assignment, Fafnir randomly patrols the alien civilizations that have committed themselves to the Union. Seeing the flagship is a rare event and considered to be good luck on hundreds of worlds. For some it is the greatest sign of security, for others it is the herald of destruction. No other human vessel will inspire such awe and dread across so many galactic sectors. If Fafnir darkens an alien sky in anger, there will be no ground invasion, no acceptance of surrender, nothing left but ruins and bones for the astro-archaeologists to catalog.
