Description

"Thundarr Time

A planet got close,

Man's civilization

Now is toast.

Ookla the Mok,

Thundarr the human,

And Princess Ariel make

Thundarr Time!"*

I don't know if there's a significant crossover between the folks who know about/watched Thundarr the Barbarian and the kids who watch Adventure Time, but man, if it were up to me, the entire world would fit into the union of that particular Venn diagram.

F'rills guys. The two shows aren't exactly the same, but AT has a boat-load of TtB DNA in it. A post-apocalyptic world full of weird mutants and sorcery, where a human guy runs around on adventures with his furry buddy and a princess...

Man, so good!

Full disclosure: I totally ripped off the background of this picture from the interwebs, and their supply of cool Adventure Time pics!

*sung to the tune of the Adventure Time theme song.

Thundarr is the best 1980s cartoon ever.

I used to watch Thundarr on Cartoon Network in the 1990s, when I was a kid. It was the one show that made me want to be an animator. I thought I was the only one who saw the similarities Between Thundarr and Adventure Time but apparently I'm not. Wow, this is way beyond epic.

Thanks! I actually got to take a cartooning class with Rick Graham, one of the animators of Thundarr. I had no idea he was even remotely related to the project until he started talking about this weird show he had done, and how standards and practices guys would never let the Mok rip anything in half, even if it was a robot. And I thought, "Mok? Did my teacher work on Thundarr?"

Yup. My teacher worked on Thundarr.

You could kill to get into it, but the standards and practices guys would get really cheesed off at you.

I've also noticed the similarities with the show. I really like Thundarr because it focuses more on the world where Adventure focuses more on the characters. Both shows are great in their own respects, but I think Thundarr was ahead of it's time.

I know, right? The stories were a tad clunky, but the world building... My gosh!

Thundarr created a world that was new but also familiar something I think more popular shows of the era didn't do, making them less interesting like say He Man or Thundercats. I'm not dissing those shows, I just thought that Thundarr's world was more interesting because it took place in a world reminiscent of ours. I kind of wonder if the creators of adventure time had ever watched Thundarr because not only are the setting's similar, but Finn had a golden sword which kind of reminded me of Thundarr's sun sword, which we all know is just a lightsaber with a different name, but still cool.
