And here we have another scorecard for a show which I have been watching - Invader Zim. Admittedly, I started watching this show way back in early 2018 when I finished Ren and Stimpy for the first time, but between now and then I have delayed watching this show between episodes and took quite a long hiatus during the middle of the season before getting back into it last week and powering through it despite a lack of motivation to do so.

And yeah, while this is a really solid show and I do enjoy it, I wasn't really interested in going on with the show. I don't exactly know why, but I think it might be to do with this show's art style. It kind of...turns me off. It looks absolutely amazing in some locations such as Zim's base and space, but otherwise I'm not too big of a fan of it. This show has a fair bit of disturbing imagery, but that's not my main problem with it. It's actually the colour palette. The show has a darker colour palette than most shows, which is fine and all. But like literally every scene looks kind of dark so the actual dark scenes in this show don't stand out as much. And because of that, I'm not actually as interested in the visuals and what's going on as I could be, and sometimes it kind of distracts me from the writing.

And yeah, that's the other problem I can take with this show at times. The writing is kind of hard to follow in like half of the episodes, even in the episodes which I enjoy. I tend to be at least a little bit confused every time I watch this show. The best episodes seem to have more simple plots which are easy to follow and take advantage of their premises. And then there are episodes like Plague of Babies, Attack of the Saucer Morons and especially Germs which straight up confuse me. I understand that this show packs in a whole load of action and substance in just 11 minutes, but the writing needs more clarity so the audience can understand exactly what is going on, instead of us having to pick up important information during every bit of dialogue.

But moving on from the negative side, this show really excels in the action department. Pretty much every episode contains really cool action set pieces which keep you engages, and the animation during these scene are at their best in terms of visuals. A lot of these set pieces massively upgrade my ratings for certain episodes because I really do enjoy them. Notice how most of my bottom 5 don't have much action to it. The only exception to that is Dib's Wonderful Life of Doom which actually got the bad rating in a very strange way. This is probably the only episode I have given - or probably will give - a bad rating because there are too many PLEASANT things which happen. That episode is basically a long, drawn-out montage of Dib living a perfect life and the end result is one of, if not the most boring episode in the show which an ending which extremely confuses me.

The characters here are passable. I love the rivalry between Dib and Zim and how either of them can get the upper hand in the end of any given episode. It's a really clever setup where the protagonist is in the wrong, while the antagonist is actually in the right. Dib is probably the most interesting character because he is working to save the human race, and everyone seems to dislike him and doesn't believe in what he knows is the truth. Zim is the funnier character and his schemes are always really entertaining to watch. The side characters do bring things down though. They're either just there, or they are straight up annoying. (GIR) And then there is Gaz who I either hate or find really funny depending on the episode.

This show can have some pretty good comedy sometimes. Ironically, I find the main comedy relief character (GIR) to be really unfunny for the most part, but Zim himself is probably the most funniest character in the show. From his extreme overreactions, to just his voice which I love hearing. I also love ome of his one-liners, most notably "LIES!" Overall, while there are a couple of flaws in this season, the first season of the show still has a lot of good elements to it and it's safe to say that this is a GOOD seasom. It's not really something which I get excited to watch, but as it stands, this season is still pretty enjoyable.
