Well, for me it was easier to choose, as after graduating with the engineering diploma, I couldn't get an engineering related job! It was a really bad time for the job market back then. But then I got a job doing web design and online graphics. That got me thinking into looking into taking another diploma in arts, and after a year or so of working at the web design firm, I went and attended art school and got a degree as well.

After that, it was art all the way.

If you can get a good job in the Aerospace industry, and you really like it, you can stay with it and do your art on the side as a hobby.
If you have the free time, you can freelance on the side, as you say. If after some time, you find that art is more satisfying, and you can earn enough money as an artist, then you can make the switch. It's not easy to do it this way (as you'll be doing two things at the same time), but it's safer.

Cos doing art is all and fine, but bills have got to be paid, and it's riskier if you have a family to support too.
