He will protect the forest from despair and darkness.

He wanted a charactersheet but when I read the description and what he means to do, protecting forests and being a general good soul, I couldn't resist painting this scene.
The stag embodies darkness, death and despair.

Just my personal thought, but if you feel like you need words to explain what the characters in your piece represent, then you weren't very successful in showing that to the audience with just the shapes, lines and colors. All in all, I think the overall composition and flow of the picture is very successful, and I think the role reversal between stag and dragon is very unique. Well worth the watch!

Ha! What a twist! I think normally it would be the stag who would be portrayed as the protector and the dragon would be the villain, but I like how the roles have been reversed here...Good Show!!

The stag in here kinda reminds me of the one from Fantasia 2000's Firebird Suite... Could be me tho 8'D

I like the scales on the dragon`s chest, they appear as if they can could withstand a cannonball.
The deer`s antlers are great looking as well. They almost look as if they can move like tentacles.

A pretty epic concept, and I like how the creatures have swapped positions. Usually it is the Elk that represents the protector of the forests and a dragon would usually symbolize destruction.

I don't know if anyone else has mentioned it, but the scales going up the front of the dragon's throat look like a fern frond! Very apt.

At first glance I thought the stag was the protector.ย I thinkย it has to do with composition.ย As viewer, I identified with the character that was closest to me layout-wise.ย Otherwise, this is a pretty amazing image.ย Very evocative

This is the best piece of artwork I've ever seen. You'd usually think it's the other way around, where the stag protects the forest. This, where the dragon protects the forest, makes the painting stunning.
I love this picture, if I could, I would hang it up on a wall in my bedroom.
