Description
edit: the consensus seems to be, it's not cannibalism since they're 2 different species.-----------

Ones a horse, ones a deer, it's fiiiine they don't even have the same skeletal structure (assuming pure horse)

I'd say it's about as cannibalistic as a human eating a monkey.

It would actually be more similar to a human eating a raccoon or something. The species are very different/completely unrelated

I dont really see the cannibalism, different species entirely
I love every bit of this!

It's not cannibalism if it's not the same species, so you'r good

Cannibalism or not, I love the sense of movement/action you've captured here. So full of energy and the fact you left brush strokes "raw" made it even more awesome!

I didn't consider the cannibalism aspect until I read your comment and I'm laughing :'D beautiful piece though, loving the motion.

I don't think that this would qualify as cannibalism. I doubt that a centaur could reproduce offspring with a deer.
Even if ignoring the human part: A horse "hunting" deer would be similar to an eagle hunting a pigeon, which is completely normal.

Researched a bit and found out deer and horses are not the even the same order (deer is part of the order Artiodactyla, horses are part of Perissodactyla) let alone family, genus or species. You have to have a VERY wide understanding of cannibalism to count this as such.
So technically there is no reasonable hint towards cannibalism in this drawing. Deer and horses just happen to look similar but there is in fact a lot of evolutionary history between those two. The only reason they don't kill each other is because they're herbivores.

I love how you drew the deer's legs!! They look so slender and quick!
I personally don't agree with the idea of centaurs... but this is a beautiful piece!

Thank you! Yeah, the deer on the far right is my fav part of the whole painting actually.
Centaurs are weird creatures anatomically, but pretty cool looking!

Agreed! The expression of all figures is amazingly dynamic. By the by, maybe I'm setting myself up for internet hate here, but I'm mystified by your comment...what do you mean by saying you don't agree with the idea of centaurs?Β

Anamarf In reply to Shuukaku92 [2017-02-07 15:02:40 +0000 UTC]
XD hah, no hate here... just my own opinion, hopefully with respect and politeness that's what this world needs...
It's just that centaurs don't make any sense to me, anatomically. (me does not compute). They have two torsos, so that would mean two ribcages, two stomachs, etc... and the muscles...!! You see, that's a lot of anatomical problems there!!, at least in my head xp ...
Maybe there is some crazy theory out there that explains this,... but I haven't found one yet...
<)

Ooh, I see Completely with you on the anatomical weirdness of centaurs (no crazy theory explaining that as far as I know...)
Then again, most mythological creatures don't make an awful lot of sense, and the ancient cultures that they are mostly part of probably didn't really care about realism all that much anyway. The way you phrased it just got me thinking you might have some ideological problem with the concept of centaurs, which tripped me up

Lovely piece! Nice action, love how gestural it is.
It was only yesterday I was discussing the merits of centaurs being able to shoot on the run. Especially if you consider they can use a longbow, unlike all other mounted archers.

sandara In reply to BenWootten [2017-02-07 04:33:18 +0000 UTC]
Thank you!
I thought they would sort of run alongside their prey as opposed to having to ambush them.
If mounted archery is a thing, centaurs would totally own it.

Mounted archery is still a thing in Japan, and was practised by the samurai, just in case you were interested .

horses and deer have quite similar attributes, it is like cannibalism. not to mention both are 99% herbivores.

Keaze In reply to WinterCritter [2017-02-07 07:41:09 +0000 UTC]
That's like saying it's cannibalism when humans eat monkeys. Besides, horses and deer aren't even in the same order, which you can see by their number of hooves. In fact, deer are more closely related to whales than they are to horses.

WinterCritter In reply to Keaze [2017-02-07 14:32:53 +0000 UTC]
I know, I'm saying they look similar. Also, humans eating monkeys is disgusting for the same reason.

Darkfang8901 In reply to WinterCritter [2017-02-07 21:43:30 +0000 UTC]
Firstly, go tell that to some of the tribes in the Amazon. Yes, I agree that in our society it would be frowned upon to eat a monkey, but humans used to (and some still) do just that.
Secondly, chimpanzees eat monkeys, and apes are fairly closely related to monkeys, but it's not considered cannibalism because they aren't in the same species.
Cannibalism is defined as "the practice of eating the flesh of one's own species" so it's only cannibalism if you're eating someone/thing in your own species.
Just becuase it's disgusting to you doesnt mean it's cannibalism.
Forgive me if this sounds harsh and rant-y, it was not meant to come out that way, and if it does I'm sorry.
Sandara, you're art is gorgeous and I love it.

WinterCritter In reply to Darkfang8901 [2017-02-07 23:33:37 +0000 UTC]
I never said it WAS cannibalism, I said it is LIKE cannibalism, in my own opinion. A centaur presumably has the intelligence of a human, while monkeys and apes do not, so I would not judge a wild animal for killing it's own kind or similar kind. Also, calm down.. this is just a fake creature, and I made a tiny opinion in reply to someone.. I don't know why so many "know-it-alls" feel the need to reply to me. Do you get some sort of satisfaction out of this? lol

Similar attributes doesn't equate cannibalism though, plus i was saying that this creature is an elvish creature, which is probably omnivorous like humans.

Elves are usually portrayed as being vegetarian lol. What matters is if it can digest meat. Where is the stomach? Does it have multiple stomachs?

Equids and cervids are very different, and aren't even that close to each other from an evolution standpoint.
