Does how they die affect their personalities? Like, she went giggly-crazy and committed a murder-suicide, or ODed on a stimulant?

SandraInk In reply to Dante8411 [2011-08-16 18:18:17 +0000 UTC]

their death doesn't really affect their personalities. Only some of my characters are affected by it, like Mia, who is traumatized by it. Others just seek revenge.

Do they all remember dying, or are some just aware that they're dead now without recalling the experience?
I imagine remembering dying would have a bit of an impact...

SandraInk In reply to Dante8411 [2011-08-17 01:58:05 +0000 UTC]

It depends. If they where fully awake, they remember everything. But if they where poisoned, drugged, asleep... they don't recall what happened.
Of course, if their death was traumatizing, they might have mental disorders afterwards. For example, one of my characters was devoured by huge black dogs while she was trying to scape, so she tries to "kill" every dog she sees after her death. Others just don't want to accept that they are dead and they think that they are still alive.

Yeah, that's what it looked like.
Kill is in quotes...do they only exist as ghosts now, with no physical forms?

haha I like how you ask interesting questions
After their death, they leave their bodies behind, and only their soul remains. The "Land" of the dead is habited by souls only, but they have a physical appearance in that dimension (they have the same look that they had when they died). However, they can be "killed" again, if someone destroys their souls. Since there's nothing left after that, they disappear.

I do try to be interesting, but I'm also a debatably OCD perfectionist. I've had to swear off RPGs because I keep talking to AND mind-scanning every NPC. If it wasn't for my ADD, I'd spend all of my time in Morrowind reading books.
So they're all set in a sort of Netherworld. Actually, if it's at all pleasant in the Land of the Dead, I'd say it's a lot like Other World in Dragonball.
Probably more like Yu Yu Hakusho, which I only read like 5 issues of...

SandraInk In reply to Dante8411 [2011-08-17 12:11:29 +0000 UTC]

No, it isn't pleasant at all. it is a very large world, and there are many different kingdoms. There are criminals and evil guys just like the ones on earth. It is another dimension, the land of the dead. I have never been a Dragon ball fan, so I don't really know about that place.

Dante8411 In reply to SandraInk [2011-08-17 13:45:12 +0000 UTC]

So is it a sort of apocalyptic wasteland type of world no matter where you go, or are different kingdoms vastly different depending on their ruler?
It sounds like a sort of unbiased purgatory, implying that there is no Heaven or Hell or at least that there is no direct access to either.

Other World in Dragonball is basically a closed area of space. It has a Hell which really isn't that bad, everyone has a halo, it can be entered by people with teleportation abilities, and people from it can (rarely) visit their homes for maybe three days max (less if they expend too much energy). They have a sort of pseudo-Valhalla, too. Good/strong people get to keep their bodies, rather than being ethereal wisps, and often hold fighting tournaments or just spar.
I forgot about that last part when I made the comparison...
...so it sounds now a bit more like the world in Death Note. [link] Just physically.

SandraInk In reply to Dante8411 [2011-08-17 14:23:56 +0000 UTC]

Not apocalyptic. It doesn't look like the shinigami realm either. That place doesn't have buildings... my world is full of cities, woods, lakes, montains, graveyards, castles, abandoned mansions,...it is an altered reflection of our world. Have you played the Zelda games? (Ocarina of time, twilight princess, or majora's mask?) That's more or less how I picture it (but more complex, and with more kingdoms).

It isn't a purgatory, there's no hell or heaven. And yes, each kingdom is different, there are peaceful towns and corrupted cities. The main one has a medieval look and has a "Transilvanian" style. It has lots of bars, castles, churches, factories, shops and skeletons walking down the street.

Nobody really understands why they are there, they just have to deal with it. Some people are happy, others seem depressed, and some want to destroy that dimension (just like the living).

Dante8411 In reply to SandraInk [2011-08-17 14:34:44 +0000 UTC]

Okay, so I'm thinking it's basically like Oblivion. The RPG. If you haven't played it or Morrowind, basically a massive, medieval-times fantasy setting, with kingdoms, different races, and politics. Most of the land is just wilderness with dangerous creatures around, and there are many different plants.

Well, if it's just the one world with a neutral starter setting, doesn't that sort of automatically make it a purgatory? That's what I'd think, anyway. I guess it's just a matter of what's in a name.

I hope I'm not annoying you with all of this...

SandraInk In reply to Dante8411 [2011-08-17 14:49:25 +0000 UTC]

Nooo you re not annoying me at all! it is nice to see someone that is interested in my story

Never heard of it, but it does seem similar. It also sounds like Zelda, which is my fav game since I was 7.

You can see it as a purgatory, everyone can have their own vision about it. However, in my story it is not considered a purgatory by my characters. It is a second chance maybe. A new life with new rules, worlds to visit and experiences to live. Some consider it a disgrace because they are unable to see the good side of their situation. There's no explanation given about where they have been sent.

There are huge monsters that are formed by the souls that got lost in their way to their afterlife. Their origin is not clear, but they are blind and they only have negative feelings such as anger and sadness. They unintentionally destroy towns while they move when they appear, and the people that want to destroy the afterlife world pretend to use them to reach their goals.

Dante8411 In reply to SandraInk [2011-08-17 15:47:06 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, pretty much, except Oblivion is much more serious and detailed. To be honest, I don't even own it. I've just played a little at a friend's. I did torrent Morrowind, though.

Well, Land of the Dead. Works for me. I just like to draw parallels.
So is everyone there immortal (ageless)? Or does death by natural causes cause reincarnation? It'd be sort of depressing to have inevitable absolute obliteration looming over you.

The monsters sound more like split souls than lost ones. As though somewhere, maybe locked away, are positive, sense-enabled counterparts with little or no physical ability.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SandraInk In reply to Dante8411 [2011-08-17 17:00:22 +0000 UTC]

It depends too. Some are ageless, but some aren't. If they where cursed they might keep aging until they eventually "die" and disappear. In most cases they remain as they looked like when they died. There are some skeletons, but nobody knows why they have that form.

Hum, that's a good idea. But I see those monsters as humans that committed suicide or that spent their life killing and hurting others. Humans that lost their way and that died with no hope or good feelings. That's why they became part of brainless and irrational monsters blinded by hate and desperation. They are constantly hungry, and they feed on the habitants that live in the land of the dead. That's why they all fear these monsters and they try to destroy them when they appear. They are truly disgusting and and they only kill because they need food, not because they enjoy destroying people.

However my story is still developing in my head so there are many facts about it that might change as time goes by.

Dante8411 In reply to SandraInk [2011-08-17 17:31:03 +0000 UTC]

Ah, the Beetlejuice method. Drowned people get to look totally normal, burned people are horrible freaks forever.
...but what if someone was crushed to death?
What decides if some are ageless?

That sort of makes sense, but it raises issues, like how they became powerful monsters from a human soul (as opposed to it being because their "weakness" was part of the half removed), and it's odd that they kill for survival because in life they killed for pleasure. Just my opinion, though.

It's good to talk about ideas to try to work out kinks. I'm designing a world, too, but so far it's pretty undetailed.

SandraInk In reply to Dante8411 [2011-08-17 20:45:35 +0000 UTC]

why do you always have to compare it to something else haha.
I think it's quite logical to keep them as they where before. It is less confusing, and it makes the story more interesting.

At first nobody understands their nature, But they eventually discover that there's someone controlling them.
While they where alive they only had fear, sadness, anger, hatred, revenge, no will to live... those negative feelings make them weaker. That's why when they die and travel to the afterlife they get easily caught by the person who manipulates the monsters. He is the one in charge of composing and shaping those creatures by using all the lost souls that he has trapped (it won't work if only one soul is used, he needs hundreds). Since their soul became weak they no longer have personality or will. They lost their humanity and became part of a gigantic abomination (It's body has a pale and viscous flesh and there are human bodies moving inside of them).

It's only an early concept, I will change it as well, I always end up changing most details :>

Dante8411 In reply to SandraInk [2011-08-17 22:29:48 +0000 UTC]

It's the best way to get an illustration of it.
What if souls were initially in the form they died in, but slowly regenerate over time?

Well, that makes a lot more sense.

I'm pretty stubborn about my details...
