Description Series: Zeta Gundam (anime) / Advance of Zeta (manga)

Asshimar (massed produced mobile weapon)

This is one of my favorite non-Gundam mobile suits of all time. There are a couple of versions created by a couple of different artists which I borrowed from to create the model: one from Kunio Okawara and the other, Kenki Fujioka. The model basically follows Okawara's outward design as Fujioka's version is much larger/heftier looking -- though they're ostensibly the same machine. Detailing the mechanics on the inside, especially the skeleton of the drum frame was based off of Fujioka's design however. The transformation ultimately yields a UFO inspired mobile armor (kind of Hamburger or Cheese Wheel shaped) while the mobile suit is a mono-eyed, heavily armored beast. There's no shield as the ceramic composite armor is capable of taking some attacks both physical and energy based. Though the machine has a "single-camera" it is also fitted with several assist cameras if the main one blows out. Incidentally, the Zeta Gundam series hints at somewhere near 6 backup eyes while the Zeta Gundam movie "Heirs to the Stars" shows 3 backup eyes specifically -- so I built 3. There are no weapons other than the beam rifle. No beam sabers or the like. The machine is principally fielded by various parts of the Earth Federation -- especially the TITANS. In the ADVANCE OF ZETA manga, the machine goes through multiple design changes (courtesy of Fujioka Kenki) and model changes.

The biggest weakness (like most transformable machines) is it's ability to transform since the shifting of parts leaves vulnerable areas temporarily open to attack.

As far as the model goes, there are a few glaring errors. The biggest is that the rear backpack(butt pack?) should have some clamps and vents for the boosters --I forgot that . There should also be a center indention along the UFO armor's midsection. The mesh's transformation from MS to MA, while it works, is not exactly "pretty" either so I'll have to work on that.

Software: Lightwave 3D (modeling/rendering), Hexagon (UV's), Photoshop (post process)

I have a soft spot for most mass produced units. From the father of every mobile suit. The Zaku I, to the clunky Tieren of Gundam 00. I also have a soft spot for the odd designs. Asshimar being one of those. I'm glad to see other people respecting the lower class ms. As one of my favorite Characters once stated. It's not the ms, I'ts the pilot using it. I love gundams and all, however I when play a gundam game with the option of it. I use mass produced units because it proves you have more skill. This might be my opinion but it's what I stick to.

now that you have done this in 3d i have a question

I just realized that this looks like it has the head of a DOM. Does it?

The eye section looks similar, but unlike a dom, the Asshimar has extra eyes to take the place the of the mono-eye if it's ever severely damaged. Add to that the angularity of the eye window and the Ceramic armor head (which is several times larger than that of a dom) and you get the Asshimar. Similar face, but no cigar.
Sorry for the late reply too.

I see. How well could it compete with the Dom? And no worries about the late reply.

Considering the Asshimar's armor is a newer ceramic composite type and is capable of taking a lot more punishment, the Asshimar's in-atmosphere flight ability and hi maneuverability I would guess the outdated Dom could lose if it was armed improperly or the pilot was a lacky. Pilot's ability would be a factor I think, since the Dom could win if the pilot was able to think fast enough to hit the asshimar just right (during transformation), etc. It's not 100% either way, but I would personally go for the Asshimar.

It's kind of ironic, the Asshimar can't do jack in space even though it's a UFO MS.

BTW, nice picture.

I really like this work, it's amazing! But...Should it have the Earth Federation symbol as well as the Titans logo on it? I know the Titans was originally a faction of the Fedration but I don't recall both logos, I don't know I might be wrong.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

sandrum In reply to Rainpheonix [2008-03-30 01:19:22 +0000 UTC]

You're probably correct. I saw both logos in a magazine a year or so ago which is why I included both. Since this is just the Test Team logo, I figured it could pass as a Special Forces machine as well.

Don't mention it, you should feel really proud of your work.

I don't model mechs in 3D, but I do paint lots and lots of model kits, so I know how it feels when you take (for example), that bunch of plastic, and manage to make it look better than the box pictures.

That's what I feel you are doing with your 3D art, you are taking the awesome Gundam designs we all love...and you actually make them look better than the original art in most cases. Is a heck of a job to turn polygons into a kick-ass Asshimar or a Zeta man

tyrant001 [2007-07-31 05:42:16 +0000 UTC]

Wow...just...wow. I really cant express over here the way I'm shocked by your work. I'm a model-kit fan, I build a lot of MG and HG kits (more than 40, all hand painted) and some SRW ones like the Huckebein and R series.
I truly love Gundam... (the UC most of all) and...man...yours is the best MS 3D art I have been able to find ...EVER.
You make them look PERFECT, no extra unnecessary details, no major design-errors... nothing! The pictures are awe-inspiring.

I usually don't tell artists how good they are, I think they already know, but on this case, since I feel there's really NO ONE there (at least not hired with Sunrise) with your skill...I say: YOU ROCK! Keep it up!

Wow, I thought I had replied to this some time ago. Thank you for that very nice comment though. Personally, I always feel that I have a ways to go until I solidify where I want to be, but if people along the way like what they see, then I'm at least confident that I'm on the right track. I guess no one really needs to leave a comment, but seeing comments like this really make my day. Thank you so very much, Tyrant!!

I have to admit, I'm not a fan of the Asshimar in its default Titans colors. The cheese wheel look is funny in a way, but given the very obvious head homage, I much prefer the Gabriel Zola colors [link] That said, you made what I always thought was a rather goofy MS look pretty damn cool. Nice job.

Usually the programs I use are listed at the bottoms of the deviation descriptions. They change a bit from time to time. Some I learned in Uni some are self taught (probably about half and half).
