Description "This is why you're not allowed to decorate the tree..."

"But..I look wonderful!" The crimson dragon cried, batting his eyes to emphasise his newfound beauty.

The dragoness sighed, trying and failing to suppress her grin. "Now you will get sparkly tinsel stuck between your scales..."

"And what's wrong with a sparkly dragon?"

*** *** ***

An art request for a friend. She is the black/purple/blue dragon that I tried to make her not look too much like Saphire.

The red companion is her partner. She asked for a playful scene, and this is the best that I could come up with, which is just as about as festive as my dragons get. :3

*** ***

Size - A4, Media - Letraset promarkers and flexmarkers

Although it was a challenge trying to make the dragons expressive and detailed, I'm quite pleased with how they turned out.

This picture is awesome! I loved the dialogue!
(I can't believe that this is markers!  My marker skills would just leave a giant blob of color... )

Thanks, I wanted the description to be short and sweet. I highly recommend Letraset markers if you get the opportunity to try them out, they take a bit of experimenting to get the hang of blending and shading, although I tend to do less blending than I used to and kind of just hope the colours blend if I add layers whilst the ink is still wet. xD

I'm sure that wouldn't happen if you used marker paper aha. I once used the wrong side of marker paper. Did not end well.

I've never used Marker Paper before(Never even knew that was a thing)... and I can't really imagine adding layers of ink to a paper either... But, anyway, it looks very cool!

Oh no! Is one side of the paper... waxy? Is that what Marker Paper is?

SaphireDragon16 In reply to Pearlbomber [2017-01-11 18:11:52 +0000 UTC]

It doesn't take too long, just occasionally have to pause to wait for the ink to dry. It's a bit more pricey than normal paper but I usually buy an A3 booklet and cut the sheets in half / down to size, and use it for sketches and as normal paper. Except for coloured pencils works. I've fallen in love with Ebony sketchbooks for colouring pencil works!

Yep, that describes it very well. One side has a shiny/wax coating which stops the ink from bleeding through but the ink does not set well on that side if you attempt to colour on it accidentally.

Never though of waiting for ink to dry in ink drawings...

That's pretty smart, I'll bet that saves you quite a bit of money!

Yay! I correctly guessed a thing!
What do you mean by not set? Like, will it not dry or will it run?

SaphireDragon16 In reply to Pearlbomber [2017-01-14 11:07:28 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I use that paper most of the time now.

It will dry, but it takes longer then it should and smudges reallly easily until it dries, it might also run if you use a lot. On the side that your supposed to use the ink dries very quickly so it isn't normally an issue.

Pearlbomber In reply to SaphireDragon16 [2017-01-14 16:39:54 +0000 UTC]

Huh, I'd have thought it would have been the other way around with the ink drying... I'm guessing that the "waxy side" is very porous so the ink stays put and dries much fast!

SaphireDragon16 In reply to Pearlbomber [2017-01-28 16:45:49 +0000 UTC]

Yep, which is also why the paper can still be quite thin.

Pearlbomber In reply to SaphireDragon16 [2017-01-28 22:15:30 +0000 UTC]

True, is that special paper thinner than normal paper or is it still thicker?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SaphireDragon16 In reply to Pearlbomber [2017-01-30 18:40:18 +0000 UTC]

It's thinner, and can be used to trace if you have enough light and the lines are dark enough. I used to trace over my orginal work to avoid line marks on the paper when I coloured ~ but that became too time consuming so know I just draw directly onto the Letraset paper.

Pearlbomber In reply to SaphireDragon16 [2017-01-31 02:52:57 +0000 UTC]

Interesting, so it's part waxy but still can be used to trace? (I'm imagining it as waxy but I could be just imagining that...)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SaphireDragon16 In reply to Pearlbomber [2017-01-31 22:06:24 +0000 UTC]

I guess you could describe it as waxy...I can't really think of another way to describe it other than shiny xD

Pearlbomber In reply to SaphireDragon16 [2017-02-01 20:18:54 +0000 UTC]

That's true... some paper is grey... I find it weird that grey has two different spellings... Grey and Gray. (I think one's British English and the other American English but I'm not sure... I just prefer Grey.)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SaphireDragon16 In reply to Pearlbomber [2017-02-01 20:36:08 +0000 UTC]

Haha, I keep thinking about that every time I type it. It really bugs me, and I keep fluctuating between Grey and Gray. I think I prefer grey, but my sketchbook says Gray. Confusing much.

I recently bought a sketchbook that has grey paper, so it's fun experimenting with that and different colours ~ also have a lot to upload soon since I finally got my art motivation back and got back into to drawing!

Pearlbomber In reply to SaphireDragon16 [2017-02-01 21:56:41 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I noticed after reading Game of Thrones as they mention the grey of Winterfell a lot and then I went to type grey later and was like wait, is it Grey or Gray? I prefer Grey just because I think it looks cooler! (I don't know...)

Yay! I've actually been off this for a few days and need to catch up with uploads... I'll probably do that on the weekend... That and edit and upload some stuff...

Grey does look nicer than gray. Also, Earl Grey tea...hmmm...

Fair enough, I go through periods where I can spend quite a bit of time on DA, and then another week I'll barely have time to upload deviations. Yay uni.

Pearlbomber In reply to SaphireDragon16 [2017-03-20 19:30:38 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, we really are... (We're actually one of the only creatures that can get a broken limb or something and be able to "power through" and still survive! likely just a byproduct of the knowledge of what actually is wrong and how to fix it.)

Yeah, sleep is for the weak!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SaphireDragon16 In reply to Pearlbomber [2017-03-28 20:53:13 +0000 UTC]

I think there's some variation on that theory, quite a few animals have a fairly good chance of surviving with a broken limb...except birds and bats, once they're down they're pretty much dead, unless they're lucky.

Although some crustaceans and other marine animals such as starfish (damn I was trying to recall they're family name from memory but couldn't ~ and I literally had a lecture about them earlier today Dx) - can even regenerate limbs. Which is a really cool and useful adaptation!

Sleep is one of those mortal things xD

Pearlbomber In reply to SaphireDragon16 [2017-03-29 19:45:28 +0000 UTC]

Really? Oh, I guess I was mistaken then... Sorry about that.

Well, I know that some marine animals can regenerate limbs but they don't really have bones. Also, now that I think about it mice can regenerate toes... Ugh, I'll have to check my facts.

SaphireDragon16 In reply to Pearlbomber [2017-04-06 18:47:43 +0000 UTC]

Haha no worries, amongst my friends I'm renowned for being the dragon-nerd but even I have to check my own facts occasionally. xD

Yeah, that's a good point, crustaceans lack vertebrae. Although some reptile species can regrow tails and although I said a downed-bat is a dead-bat, if they can reach safety then the membrane on their wings can heal very rapidly.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Pearlbomber In reply to SaphireDragon16 [2017-04-09 02:50:18 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, dragons are a bit trickier to know about as they don't really exist... Unfortunately.

I just thought of something. You know how some amputees have Phantom Limb sensations and ghost feelings of a sort from their missing body part? Well, what if a bat had lost the membrane of its wings but had the Phantom limb sensations. Would it try to fly and then just... Fall?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SaphireDragon16 In reply to Pearlbomber [2017-04-09 12:08:22 +0000 UTC]

I've seen videos of bats with gaping holes in their wings that have still somehow managed to fly ~ at least for a short while before hawks got them aha.

I think they would try to fly, but then mid flight realise 'Oh dear ~ I don't think this is going to work...' and have a very unpredictable flight pattern as it loses altitude. I guess it depends on how much membrane is left on tehe rest of the wings?

Pearlbomber In reply to SaphireDragon16 [2017-04-09 17:38:25 +0000 UTC]

Huh, yeah, that sounds about right! It would be kinda like using a parachute with a hole in it!

SaphireDragon16 In reply to Pearlbomber [2017-04-09 23:04:58 +0000 UTC]

Not very effective ~ but still better than no parachute at all xD

That's true, I recently saw the trailer, seems to be a bit too similar to the first one with the 'undead' being upset with Jack for some reason. I'll still watch it though haha.

(Oh yay, you responded to this! I watched the movie and meant to comment on this again but I couldn't find it... )

Yeah it does look similar but I'll probably watch it too. I watch the last one and it wasn't that bad, Jack has a fleet, Barbosa has a phantom sword and blackbeards ship and crew, Jack's girlfriend now has a doll of him... And mermaids really scare me now! I'm still not sure if the mermaid at the end killed the priest or not...

Haha, sorry for the late reply ~ uni project has been draining my soul / time these past two weeks.

Stranger Tides was pretty good, although the whole Mermaid ship with the priest was completely unnecessary. The mermaids are pretty cool, I much prefer evil feral mermaids over pretty lady mermaids. Actually ended up somehow talking about mermaid adaptions a few days ago, and my friend challenged me to draw a 'darker mermaid' so I've actually got that was a wip at the moment.

No it's fine, I'd just watched the movie and wanted to comment to you but I lost track of where the note was...

I thought the way they toppled the ship was pretty strange, both the literal ship and figurative ship!
I guess it is more realistic I was just really shocked by how dark they turned them! I though it would be just a seduction into drowning but they went the feral route which is definitely unique I'll give them that! (By the way, their whip type weapons were soooo OP!)

Nice, I'd be interested in seeing that when it's finished!

SaphireDragon16 In reply to Pearlbomber [2017-05-18 12:07:15 +0000 UTC]

Fair enough xD

Yeah, there are too many flaws to that film in general haha but I enjoyed it all the same. :3

I really liked that darker side to them, it's more what I imagined mermaids to be like, after all surviving in a marine habitat would probably be quite difficult...and those weapons were really OP!
