Description Second chapter. Things are hotting up.
David Weber and Baen Books fans might notice that the technology isn't pure Honorverse - in fact, the two land armies alluded to are both different Baen Books military sci-fi settings in basis.

As the order of battle shows, the Equestrian ships are much more capable in missile range combat, and much less capable in energy range combat. This is a deliberate choice by their navy, and the results of this combat will be a test of the new design philosophy - one evolved by possession of many latter day Honorverse military innovations in absence of the missile pod.
Thanks to Kampzvono for letting me use the picture that inspired all this as the preview image.

Update: This is the updated and revised version of chapter 2.

I'm just wondering what series the dog Mechs come from... Looks like another series I would read
Apparently Equestria will try to pick off the Dogs at missile range, while the dogs will try to race into energy range, where their massive beam armament would make an awful mess of the Alicorn Class DNs...

That's pretty much the tactical situation now, yes, though since it's a closing engagement sniping is a little harder than it sounds at first. (I actually have this giant excel spreadsheet that keeps track of all the vectors, so this combat is going to be as correct as I can make it.)

There are downsides to a missile-based form of combat, of course. Number one is that it's... kind of supply intensive. The average Honorverse ship in early books relies on a single massive missile pod flush, and in later books they have their hollow cores to provide ammunition. That's not an option for the Alicorns, since they're designed and built by a navy for whom missile-intensive combat is a new thing - and they're working in absence of missile pods but in the presence of the ammunition-hungry double broadside.

The fighters are unfortunately unavailable thanks to the necessity of handling the Dog gunboats. Otherwise the solution would be a lot easier - plaster the Dogs with deception ECM heads and attack missiles, send in the fighters at the same time to lob in shipkillers and energy fire.

The dog Mechs will become more apparent in later chapters, and once their capabilities are revealed I'll inform everyone of their provenance.

Great to see another chapter! Soon the missiles will start flying...
I saw how the Combat Cars referenced Hammers' Slammers.

That they will. And nicely spotted - Gryphon units aren't likely to appear in this battle (it's already crowded) but their ground units are Slammers universe technology, powerguns, tribarrels, panzers and all.
The Dogs, on the other hand, build theirs on altogether a different scale.
