Description
Described by Hazel as a "slow, rather stupid rabbit" , Hawkbit is nevertheless one of the original group that follows Hazel and Fiver from the Sandleford Warren, and is loyal to Hazel. (In the series, he's apparently different? )Related content

He'd have to be a bit slow to follow a crazy bunny all the way from home to Frith knows where.

Certainly, if he had no real reason to believe Fiver was telling the truth.

Well, at that point did any of them have much reason? (And I'm looking at YOU Bigwig! You're the jerk of the bunch you are.)

The jerk that comes to trust Fiver, as they all do. I love how the rabbits all become a warren/family during their travels.

Have you done Acorn of Speedwell yet, I can't find them.
Also, have you read Tales from Watership Down? They've got good new characters in that.

His expression does look "slow and rather stupid", but that's proper for Hawkbit X)
I scanned the comments below me and didn't see anyone saying this (could be wrong here) but I'll inform you that in the TV series, Hawkbit is a really sarcastic whiner who gives some comic relief, along with Dandelion, who's really chipper (and has an annoying voice, imo.)

Thank you!
I have heard that about the series, though I haven't really seen it myself. Does it work to have his character be that way?

Well, it IS a kids' cartoon series, so it makes sense to have a snarky/silly character because they just tend to work in kids' shows. So yes

I don't remember there being anything in the text that says he's gray, but I could be wrong....

Good picture.
As for Hawkbit's (and Acorn's and Speedvell's) near-mutiny, I want to say that at that time Hazel was still new to the role of the leader, so others had a rather good reasons to doubt in his ability to deliver them wherever they were going to. What is more, they had no proof that Sandleford Warren was or is about to be destroyed, so for them return was a viable alternative. They left it in search of better life and not because they believed that inevitable doom is approaching. Yes, they might had been punished in Sandleford for being part of the group, which attacked Owsla officer. However, for someone who is in the middle of unknown and dangerous land, dying in that land is far more certain that getting executed back home.
One should also remember about part of rabbit's nature which is: "if situation gets bad and dangerous, run to the burrow, to the warren". It's in rabbit's nature to be near the safe hiding place, because almost everything in the world is trying to kill them. When it seemed that they are not getting to any safe place, everybody started getting nervous and Hawkbit eventually vocalised their fear and doubts. Wasn't it understanable to be scared in such situation and wanting to go back?
I'm sorry if I stated only the things that were obvious to you already, but I had the need to say it. Didn't want anybody to think that Hawkbit challenged Hazel's authority, because the former was too stupid to realize that going back was foolish or because he was just insubordinate trouble-maker.

Oh, no worries. I did already know those things, but they needed to be said ^__^ And, let it be known that, once Hazel was clearly chief, Hawkbit was completely loyal to him ^__^

And let it be also known that Hawkbit had his uses too, like when he found the empty burrows at Watership Down, which (as was pointed out in the book) probably saved at least one rabbit life.

Hawkbit is probably an underused character when it comes to the novel; He is slow and stupid, and most likely a hindrance on ocassion. We never really get to see his growing in personality as the story progresses.
I believe that even though he makes it hard Hazel somethimes, he really admires him, though he's too ashamed to say such.

Not much, no, though after that first near-mutiny, he's completely loyal to Hazel, which says a lot about him. I think he could have held his own with more 'screen-time', as it were.

That's the thing too. I think his journey would be to find something that he's good at, to show his worth somehow. And in the end he shows his worth by being courageous, albeit foolish.

In the show, he's more pessimistic and lazy. He tends to pass a lot of smart remarks (notably to Bigwig and Hazel) and along with Dandelion, they provide some comic relief among the group. However, he's also pretty loyal to Hazel and does show some compassion towards all of his friends.
Needless to say, he's one of my favorite characters in the show.
Oh, I almost forgot, he and Clover become a couple in the end.

I've heard that there are a lot of changes from the story. In the books, he's not a huge complainer, but he has his moments. Mostly, he just follows the others.

He's still one of my favorite characters. Some of the others include Hazel and Fiver (although in the show, they go back and forth for me), Campion (what they did with him in the show was brilliant), and Vervain.

another good design: the variation of the dark brown fur colour near his front paws and arms makes him look strangely like a rat, and his face gives off that kind of 'simple' mind about him.
One quick mistake, though: the title you gave the piece is 'Hawkbit' (which is correct), but in the piece the lettering says 'Buckthorn' instead of 'Hawkbit' (as well as in the description).
