Description
Ephi woke up to moonlight shining on his face. As he groggily sat up he realized his hands were tied behind his back by some elaborate handcuffs. The handcuffs seemed to be injecting him with some kind of poison because he still felt weak. Ephi couldn’t even figure out what he was doing here and how he got here in the first place. He then heard some female voices, “We finally got that vampire hunter. Now all we need to do is wait for the Queen.” Vampires? Ephi thought and that was when everything came back to him.
He was heading out to get something to eat when a female vampire appeared before him. The first vampire was only a distraction as a second female vampire came up from behind and bit him, making him lose consciousness. Ephi realized that the toxin that was being injected into him from the handcuffs must’ve been vampire poison. Ephi looked around and realized he was in cell of a dungeon in some kind of ancient castle. Ephi sighed as he tried to figure out how he would get out. “Ephilon!” cried a small women’s voice. Ephi turned his head to the barred window and couldn’t believe who he saw.
It was Lira. She slipped through the bars and landed on the ground next to Ephi. “Lira what are you doing here!?” he whispered in surprise. Lira grinned, “Why else would I be here? I’m helping you escape!” Ephi looked at her curiously, “But how did…” he was interrupted by her, “Find you? I saw what happened to you Ephi. I knew you told me you were a vampire hunter before, but I never knew you were weak to female vampire toxin. After they took you away, I did what no sane person would do. I followed them. When they threw you in this cell I left and quickly made the necessary preparations to help you. So now here I am again,” she explained.
“Preparations?” he asked and Lira revealed to him a cure berry, “I had to bargain with Venom to give me another one of these when I said it was for you. But first, let me get you out of those handcuffs,” and she walked behind Ephi. Ephi looked behind him, “No offense Lira, but I don’t think you…” “Done!” she said and the handcuffs fell off his wrists. Lira returned to the front of Ephi and he rubbed his wrists saying, “How exactly did you do that?” Lira hand the berry to Ephi and while he was eating it, “When I was human, I trained myself in all kinds of skills. I didn’t think I was going to live long so I wanted to try everything I could. Some of my friends are master thieves, and I learned that from them. The only natural talent that I was born with was singing,” she replied.
Ephi stood up, “You’ve got all kinds of weird friends, don’t you,” he said as Lira was picking the lock on the cell. When the cell opened she said, “More than you could ever know,” and she jumped onto Ephi’s shoulder. Ephi got out of the cell and starting walking down the hall, “What was that?” one of the voices said. “Shit,” Ephi said and Lira jumped off him, “Don’t worry Ephi, I got this covered. Escape when you see the opening. I’ll meet you outside.” Before Ephi got a word in otherwise Lira ran away from him and into the view of the vampires. “Who are you vermin!?” one of the vampires sneered.
Lira started waving her arms, “Hunters of the night? Ha! You couldn’t catch me even if you tried losers!” she taunted. “WHY YOU!” and the vampires began chasing her. When the coast was clear Ephi took this chance and escaped out of the castle. When he got out he realized the castle was situated on a cliff not too far above the ocean. After a few minutes Ephi felt Lira on top of his head, “You’re late,” he said jokingly. Lira stomped on his head, “Yeah well. Let’s see you try effortlessly escaping four vampires when you’re only 6 inches tall!” she said back.
She pulled Ephi’s hair, “Speaking of vampires…” Ephi looked up and saw four silhouettes around the full moon. Ephi looked down at the water, “Lira, you change to a human size during the full moon right?” “Yes I do, but…AAHH!” Ephi jumped off the cliff and dove into the water. When Ephi rose up out of the water he was in his merman form while Lira changed to her human size. Lira started coughing, “Give me a warning next time you idiot!” she said angrily. “No time Lira,” Ephi replied and started swimming as Lira gripped to his hair, the vampires flew after them.
“Ephi go that way!” Lira said as she pulled Ephi’s hair to show him what direction to go. Ephi turned and notice he was heading towards a high cliff crescent moon shaped island and he was heading into the center. “Lira, are you serious!? It’s a dead end this way!” he said, “Trust me!” she shouted back. Ephi continued to head into the island as the vampires drew closer. As Ephi was half way into the island Lira shouted, “Stop down Ephi!” and he stopped, “Now duck all the way into the water,” she said and then she held her breath. Ephi ducked into the water and the vampires flew past him. After about 5 seconds he rose again and noticed that the vampires were struggling in midair.
“What’s going on? Why are they just staying there?” Ephi didn’t understand. Lira giggled, “Ephi, look closer, they’re trapped.” Ephi looked closer and saw a fifth figure above the four struggling vampires. It was Venom, and the four vampires were stuck in a massive spider web. “Venom!?” Ephi was shocked. Venom ignored Ephi and looked down at the vampires, “Well, well, well. I’ve never eaten vampires before. This should be fun…” and he began to torment his struggling prey.
Ephi looked away from the blood bath and then felt Lira tugging on his hair, “Ephi, can you get me off you head? I don’t have any of my mouse abilities when I’m in my human form,” she called out. Ephi gently picked Lira off his head and had her in his open palm looking at her at eye level. Lira stood up and wrung out her tail, “Whew, thanks Ephi.” Ephi grinned, “I should be thanking you. Did you plan all this out? You knew I was going to jump into the water?”
Lira wrung out her shirt, “No, I didn’t expect you to jump into the water. You just did it before I got a chance to say it,” she lowered her shirt and looked at Ephi, “No need to thank me Ephi. I owe you for saving me before.” Ephi looked at her curiously, “So what…does this mean us even?” she laughed, “No way, not by a long shot. I’m just glad I could help you. I mean…we’re friends right?” and Ephi nodded. “Well now,” she put her hands on her hips, “Mind putting me up on the cliff? I got to wait for Venom to finish his…ugh…meal.” Ephi gently placed Lira on the cliff.
Lira waved happily at Ephi, “See you later Ephi!” Ephi smiled, “I guess this changes our score to 3-2 huh?” Lira lowered her arm and looked at him curiously, “What do you mean? I didn’t get away…” “I think when one saves the other should count as a point,” Ephi interjected. Lira smiled, “Fair enough. Then it’s 3-2. Bye Ephi, see you later!” and Ephi swam into the ocean.
