Description
I have made a pastel tutorial, because some people haveasked me to do so and I could not even find a pastel tutorial at
DA, which quite surprised me. There were some links, but you know what they say: out there be monsters
What a lovely surprise to be on DA facebook's frontpage.
The amount of comments is heartwarming.
I will answer all in time, and thank you very much
And now a DD as well, oh wow
These are the pastels I use
Soft pastels
Hard pastels
Bubo virginianus, Great Horned Owl.
The lovely reference picture is from
Thank you Nuna for letting me use it.
You can find the photo here [link]

Nicely done, and you explain it really well,
which isn't that common in tutorials
Good job, and thanks - this is very enlightening.Β

Oh, thank you for the link to your tutorial, It's very usefulΒ !!Β
Β
When I see how detailed is your owl, I thought you used pencils pastels so I'm very surprised you did it with sticks !!!Β (I don't know how you call that form )
I have pencils and I can't do so detailed drawings... They never stay sharp more than 2 seconds and that gets me mad !!! I have Pastelmat paper and he's a rebel too...
But I'll try again following your patient method
Β
Your job is awesome Β

Thank you dearly for the compliment.
I know exactly what you mean with pastel pencils that do not stay sharp, it's awful.
Β
I use the sides of the sticks, for the little lines and keep that sharp with sandpaper.

I hate how EASY guides look - until you try them yourself and you just want to break a mirror or something I have tried doing pastels (the ones you use), and ..... I doubt I'll be doing it again. Very very very very very VERY nicely done

thanks for the llama. Maybe it's because of the thickness of the pastels. I know you can get them in pencil form as well...maybe I'll try that one day

You're welcome.
Yes they are thick, that why I use the sides of the pastels.
It takes some time getting used to that.

yeah I started using (and learned) those thick pastels back in my first year of art school and I still have them today. I just don't have the required technique to master it. It's not for everyone I guess

Ok, maybe that's so, anyway there are lots of other great mediums to use, so why bother
π: 0 β©: 1
xsanto In reply to Sarahharas07 [2013-07-01 17:58:11 +0000 UTC]
well....every medium is great for something. I still have those pastels... but I tend to try something new all the time... last new item I tried was ink pencil. Before that, coal, before that, gel pens, before that pro-markers...you know...gotta try it all (as long as it's affordable) And maaaaaybe....in the future, I'd like to try pastel out again...or even mix

I do... or... I just like to draw in general and use whatever I have...even though my most used 'material' is actually a mechanical pencil but yeah, I like to use a lot of different things. Keep things fun

Yes, it helps to keep you sharp too I think, I mean I personally find it rather boring to always use pastels, so I sometimes use pencils, or coloured pencils, just to keep things exciting

well, you're really something. I'm sure you're grand at most stuff you try out anyway. I'm not sucking up though...I really mean it

Sarahharas07 In reply to crochetkitty29 [2013-05-01 17:44:03 +0000 UTC]
Most welcome dear. To be honest I don't know for sure, because I've never tried other paper for pastels.
You do need special pastel paper however, not ordinary paper because that doesn't have enough tooth.
Maybe you can Google velourspaper to find a place where you can order that.
