Description
I have made a pastel tutorial, because some people haveasked me to do so and I could not even find a pastel tutorial at
DA, which quite surprised me. There were some links, but you know what they say: out there be monsters
What a lovely surprise to be on DA facebook's frontpage.
The amount of comments is heartwarming.
I will answer all in time, and thank you very much
And now a DD as well, oh wow
These are the pastels I use
Soft pastels
Hard pastels
Bubo virginianus, Great Horned Owl.
The lovely reference picture is from
Thank you Nuna for letting me use it.
You can find the photo here [link]

Great tutorial! Much appriciated.
I have a (stupid) question though. The pastel I know looks like this (I'm talking about the shape, not the brand).
Seems very hard to use for small details.
Is there a pencil like pastels?
And what is soft pastel? uses?

The pastels I use are the same form as the one on the photo you sent a link of.
Pastel pencils exists but I do not use them, I don'tlike them because they are not very soft. When using velourspaper the pastels have to be very soft.

The thick pastels looks very awkward. The tiny details you are drawing with such media proves you are very talended. Thanks for answering.
