the last time I drew my Mars astronauts all together was 2012, but since my style has changed a lot, I wanted to re-draw them all. honestly I think my drawing style has changed as often as these characters and personalities have changed over the last twelve years.
I often get discouraged thinking about developing this story I came up with in 2005 because I mean, how many stories and movies do we already have about the first manned missions to Mars, and who needs mine? What makes mine stand out from the rest? I need to put those worries aside and continue to develop it anyway. these guys aren’t talked about very often because I start and stop working on this project so much.
Kyle is a former test pilot and the commander of the mission, and don’t be fooled by the last name, cuz he’s as Texan as they come. With a big heart and even bigger faith, he is the glue that holds the team together and wants to see his crew work in harmony and become like family.
Sam is a physician and former flight surgeon who worked with NASA for many years before joining the astronaut corps. He was selected for the first flight to Mars primarily to focus on studying the crew’s health in space. However he doesn’t always play well with others which can cause bouts of conflict throughout the mission.
Toby Marquis is a soft-spoken Canadian engineer who had an influential role in designing the Mars landing vehicle and deep space transportation system. He had no plans of becoming an astronaut but was selected to join the crew for the maiden flight of the new spacecraft. He silently deals with clinical depression which doesn’t pan out well during a long-term mission like this one.
Sara Babin is a microbiologist and payload specialist who leads a lot of the crew’s experimentation in space and on Mars. Her husband is a cardiologist and NASA flight surgeon and encouraged her to join the astronaut corps. She is usually more professional than personable and will do anything to get a job completed to perfection.
Dairokurou, nicknamed “Daryll”, is the youngest member of the crew on loan from the Japanese space agency JAXA. Always optimistic and excitable, Daryll is a quick problem-solver and helped to write much of the software systems for the new spacecraft. He also named part of the payload and helped it become the crew’s mascot - an iguana called Paku .
Altair is a familiar face and kinda exists in both this story’s timeline but also the story with Jimmy Neutron. Not confusing at all, I know. As was mentioned before, he’s a former Air Force test pilot who always dreamed of space, and ended up being selected as the mission’s pilot.
