Description
Not bad for someone that hasn't drawn in over a decade.Solaria is the upcoming English singing voice from Eclipsed Sounds. They're holding a contest to come up with an "eclipsed" version of their sun goddess. Not really what I thought would get me to out of retirement, but with everyone else having fun, I thought why not?
Despite copious notice, I wasn't able to give myself much time, so I had to keep things relatively simple :/ I had to modify a few things as I started to see them popping up in other peoples' entries.
The mask is loosely based off of a Venetian mask design the pairs the sun and moon together in an eclipse-appropriate way. The idea had come from an optical illusion I'd seen in the past where a face in profile was overlaid on one viewed straight on. I used a quarter and penny to get the curvatures right; unfortunately for Solaria, the round mask adds about 10 pounds, and I had to extend her neck a bit to better balance the head.
Solaria has the constellation Cassiopeia imprinted on her face. For the mask, I used Cass's mortal enemy Cetus.
The rest of the outfit was based on a combination harlequin and ballet dancer. The ruff stands in for the moon which obscures a sunburst pattern on the upper body. Beyond that is the vastness of space and the music of the composer, as represented by empty staff lines. The devices on the ankles are a crescent moon and the astronomical symbol for the sun.
During an eclipse, the sun is mostly obscured except around the edges. To make something comparable, I left the arms partially exposed. I considered doing the same to the legs, but I felt, if it were a real outfit, it wouldn't sit in place.
Not to mention it just felt a bit disrespectful.
Sadly, there was no time to make a reverse view (not that it would be all that different), so this isn't likely to win.
