From what I can interpret from the image it seems like the Church wants to control women's right for abortion and sex.

It's amazing how specific people are getting with this. The key is to the woman's body. Primarily her reproductive organs, thus the struggle for control is not sprcifically about abortion or being Muslim or homosexuality. It's about having the key to YOUR OWN BODY and having the ability to choose what you do with it. When the woman has the control, she can "unlock," and open herself to choices. The choice to take birth control or get an abortion. The choice to be with whomever she desires (provided meaningful consent is acquired by any and all parties involved). The choice to cover or uncover her body in accordance with what makes her comfortable and happy. With religion in control of the key, all of these options are removed because according to religion the only time a woman should be "unlocked" is after her wedding day, and even then, she's only "unlocked" to the point of allowing her to reproduce. This is not a complicated subject, but it's portrayal is brilliant and clever.

This certainly makes a lot of bold points very loudly, and quite cleverly. Stylistically, my mind couldn't help but go to this being the sign for the designated religion vs. womens' rights area. I also wonder if the keyhole is meant to appear as analogous to a birth canal & womb as it appears to me...

This image conveys so much and opens the discussion as to what facet it represents
All I know you quite well represent each figure with simple and understandable symbolism that people can understand and is really effective
Regardless of the exact finite issue this image is pointing to, I see the idea of choice and freedom being taken away including many issues that revolve around women being challenged by 'Devout' Christians but also portions of society in general.
This piece is so effective it's ridiculously amazing

I thought that the bishop represented christianity and the lady was a muslim because the hair looks like a head dress. It looks like its representing how christians complain about muslim women covering their body/sexuality/etc and they don't like that. But I don't know, it just looks like that to me O_o
Its probably something else and I'm thinking weird things ^^'''

LunaSheWolf In reply to ZombieCowOverlord [2013-04-11 03:39:09 +0000 UTC]

you got it right and I totally agree. THat's my stance, I don't have to like it, but I want women to have the choice.

Besides what right do MEN have to say what a woman can't and can do with their body. They aren't the ones who wind up pregnant. if they did our laws would be WAY Different.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

My-Len In reply to LunaSheWolf [2013-04-11 04:32:46 +0000 UTC]

But what you said in this comment, you agree with it. You want that the woman have the say what they want to do about their bodys and not men. And last time I checked, all of them who are in charge are men.

It's a picture of a woman wanting to own her body alone and not another person, for that reason dosn't want to give her choice for that (the key) to another person (in this chase, in the pic, the church)

Or am I missinterpreting here? like someone here said something about christians and muslim woman @@

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

LunaSheWolf In reply to My-Len [2013-04-11 04:37:15 +0000 UTC]

I was just saying that if men were the ones that got pregnant our laws would be very differen and think it's funny that it is mostly men that pass or try to pass laws that limit a women's choice

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

My-Len In reply to LunaSheWolf [2013-04-11 05:06:44 +0000 UTC]

Isn't the picture saying just that? Either I missread what you did write or I interpreted to less in the picture above.

I'm not attaking you, or anything. ^^ I was just confused with the replay of yours that disagreed with the pic, but agreed in the next comment.

Of course men can't be kept totaly away off it, but they don't have that huge right to say something and make it a law.
Seeing how much more (younger) woman (and I'm not talking about the west, but also in small countrys in the 3rd world) aren't willing to take s**t from men anymore about does and don't, it will be a big change in the long run... a very long run unfortunatly, I must add.

I'm so sorry that people have chose to talk about abortion instead of your fantastic piece. I, on the other hand, will be respectful and give this piece the praise it deserves. It's simplicity juxtaposes beautifully with the message it is portraying. Juxtaposition of opposition is also in the visual itself (black and white, simplicity and complexity to a certain extent, man and woman, et cetera). Overall, it is a wonderful piece.

TheDisgusticifiedOne [2013-04-11 00:42:05 +0000 UTC]

Judging by the placemnt of the keyhole, it either has something to do with urination or sexuality. Urination isn't very symbolic, so I'm guessing the bishop represents Criastianity, and the woman is a lesbian and the struggle represents most Cristians' hostility towards homosexuals.
However, her hair (It's hair, right?) looks like a nun's headpiece, so perhaps she was forced into nunhood, but that wouldn't explain why she's naked.
Another guess is that it's on the restriction of birth control.

Paradoxigent [2013-04-11 00:24:40 +0000 UTC]

Good job, . You have made a simple image that has boasted a humongous amount of arguing and discussion on one topic. I'm sure your comment box is overflowing. Lol.

ANYWAYS, I should contribute by adding my comments to the ARTISTIC part of the design, since that is a common thing on DeviantART.
---
The way the image is made is very simple, and due to this simplicity, can create many conclusions a viewer can make. What one person will commonly know is that the man is obviously to represent a pope or some other holy figure within the Catholic system. And yet, one could disagree and just make it more as a symbolism for just Catholicism or Christianity itself. The woman could also be depicted as a nun or a general woman due to how her hair is design. It is not flowing, but it is the only article that closely represents a nun's head wear, so, again, it can be interpreted in both ways.

We also know that the key is a strong point to the image. Strangely, the keyhole being placed on the woman to me, seems to suggest more on sexuality. I'm finding it a bit difficult to see any other viewpoints. As for the key, we all know key's lock and unlock. Who wants it to be locked? Who wants it to be unlocked? Do they both want the same thing or do they differ in opinion? To me, it reflects what a person believes when they see this picture, and if this was the artist's intent, it is very well done in doing so.

The only thing I wish to know is what does the artist see in this picture?

I saw this and abortion didnt even spring to mind i see no children in the picture but this seems to relate to the issues in the Vatican that the Pope wants to make it so that men sworn to the religion of god can have sex and nuns can't. Struggle for equality. If sworn men of god can have sex why shouldn't the nuns and furthermore it sounded childish when I heard about it the

"I can but you can't!" double standard brings about a good point, a lot of people take for granted having equality where obviously in some places it still doesn't exist.

Unless its aborted at 8 months, it isn't a life.

88-92% of all abortions happen during theΒ first trimester , prior to the 13th week of gestation. The fetus hasn't even developed a nervous system until the 22-24th week.

Terrific platitudes in order to assuage the guilt of taking a life.

Hold onto that, if it keeps you sane.

It's not a just society where a murderer enjoys more rights than a defenseless child who hasn't the ability to speak in its own defense.

And if I tell you it's in the Q'uran, you won't, for fear I'll call all my Muslim buddies out to track you down and chop your head off.

Oh wait, I'm Sufi. We don't do that sort of thing.

Let's remove religion from the discussion. I know you would have sorely loved for me to use that, but while I believe life is sacred, such sentiments are clearly lost on a flea like you.

It is a life, ye of little sense or intellect. It is organic, it has cellular activity and it grows, propagates and one day (Hopefully far from that given point of time, unless a butcher like, say, Kermit Gosnell talks a woman into aborting it) and thus... it is alive.

It is singular, making it an 'a', and it lives, making it 'a life'.

Further, what if I told you that the law defines an unborn child as a human life afforded all the rights of a fully born child?

Need I go on?

The law states that if a woman, while pregnant, is murdered, the murderer is culpable for both deaths, regardless of the trimester.

Thus, abortion is legalized murder.
