Was originally going to be just that center character with a partial of the left(they were the same character at one point) but one thing led to another and I had the whole family. lol. No background but they're tromping through the snow together.Zenn, related characters, concepts and lore © me

This, this is adorable!
It like the idea of no visual gender details,
but in a way you can tell which one is the
motherly type.

Which of them is the carrier? I think the one with the blue sash is the "father", but I could be wrong.
What would a zenn call his/her parents? It seems to me that they have the equivalent of "mother" and "father" in their language, but what's their word for the third parent, and how would that translate in english?

Sarspax In reply to AntaresDrake [2010-09-02 05:18:38 +0000 UTC]
Carrier is int he middle.
There's no direct translation for mother and father because the gender role's and reproductive roles aren't the same. But the pronouns are : Nencha(NENcha); the 'n's are very strong and guttural while the a sound is very brief, Shecha(SHecha); 'she' as in 'shed', again the 'sh' is gutteral and the cha is short, Jacha(ZJAcha); 'zj' sounds like the 's' in 'pleasure' and cha same as above.
Parents pick each other for their genes, there is no love attraction between the three individuals. The biological parents raise the offspring.
Traditionally the parents take turns watching the offspring until they're old enough to follow their parents around, kinda like penguins. Whichever two parents were not staying put were out hunting/gathering/building/exploring/resting.
Basic combat is taught by the Shecha, hunting/foraging/cooking/survival by the Nencha, and tactics/psychology/academic things from the Jacha.

Very interesting! In case one youngling's parent's died, who would raise him/her? Do they have extended families?

The closest love partners of the deceased would take over. (Generally 3 love partners, can be more, 3 is typical though. Love for them is friendship over the course of their lives growing up, to put it simply. So by the time they become a threesome -snicker- they've already risked their lives for each other as warriors. If for some reason they are not in a love relationship then the deceases' three closest friends or neighbors take them in. They tend to live in close but large neighborhood communities anyway. No one would be unwilling to take them in. It's more a matter of respecting the ones who died and finding ones who the youngsters would be comfortable with.

That's very nice. It breaks my heart to see kids who spend all their lives as minors in an orphanage, only to be thrown to the streets when they are eighteen.
How safe is their society (do they have to deal with any sort of criminal acts)?
How strong are their inmune systems? Does everyone have access to medical care? How high is the carrier/infant mortality rate?

There are some sneaky ways around not doing your share of work and still getting the same amount of money or more but there's actually not a whole lot of thievery.
There are professional assassins(that also fall under the category of professional thieves) but assassinations are usually limited to corrupt political leaders.
Everyone one is trained from birth to be a fighter so its hard to say. There are those who somehow make it by with small time thievery and blackmail who prowl the more secluded areas so there is a chance of being mugged and left for dead. It's small though. Most will prey on younger Zenn if they are alone. Adults are rarely targeted because they have the same level of combat experience.
Killing in self defense is common and tends to discourage scuffles. Disputes are settled in Arenas(it's NEVER to the death).
Its far more common for someone to have a bad landing after missing a jump than it is for someone to be seriously injured in a mugging.
Everyone has access to medical care. Most living spaces are equipped with a medical chamber that will treat anything up to minor internal bleeding. Anything else and they'd have to go to their local medical facility.
Their immune systems are incredibly robust. There's very few things that can put a dent in it. Most of the microbes that can cause death have gone extinct. There are a few that can possibly leave the individual sterilized but most others will just be a major annoyance for a while.
It's almost unheard of even before medical care was available for carriers or infants to die. The only time was long before they had established cities. On occasion the child might die of hypothermia if it wandered to far from it's parents' warmth before it's coat grew out.

They are hairless at birth like mice and squirrels? What is the colour of their skin?
Besides thieves and murderers, do they also have to deal with sex offenders?
They don't seem to be very violent among themselves.
Why are arena fights never to the death?

Sarspax In reply to AntaresDrake [2010-09-06 00:03:37 +0000 UTC]
Not entirely. But like puppies. They don't have enough fur to keep themselves warm on their own but they aren't bare.
Nope. Sex is cooperative and casual sex is abundant so there is never an issue.
Because they believe that dying over something trivial is stupid. They can either settle the matter by verbal agreement or by a friendly test of skill. The arena is not limited to combat. Can also be obstacle courses.

Once again, Silvac, You've made me not regret watching your work. Slam dunk on the clothing, and kudos for including a non-adult in this piece. Children in (what I will call) sci-fi art tend to humanize a genre that can become a little too "Boobs and Guns" at times. Not that Boobs, or Guns are a bad thing in moderation.
Well done. Your work is terrific.

Yeah, thats what I liked about StarTrek and Stargate. They had the guns but a lot of it was about interpersonal conflicts and moral issues. ^Or boobs and guns when done correctly. lol

There will always be a place in my heart for Boobs and Guns. But you're right.. though my feeling is that with Startrek, the moral issues had a tendency to punch you in the face, versus a subtle "Ohhh! This episode is really about black / white relations!". Great series, nonetheless.

Holy hand grenades, man. I REALLY friggin dig this. And I love that you went the extra mile to get the fabric pattern the flow with the folds. Too often recently do I see a texture just tossed in and call it good for the day.

I'll have to speed it up on their language so we'll have some pronouns to use. Haha.
Thanks One of the few where I've actually had a set of clothes designed in mind. Lots of times I'll begin and start stalling for time by drawing out the entire body first then end up liking that too much and submitting them naked.

Well, a mutant lovechild of he, she and it is shit, but you won't want to use that probably.
I was so glad to find out (not that long ago) that I'm not the only person who draws my people/creatures naky and then dumps clothes on them afterwards.
Drawing anatomy of creatures is fun, I like the way you can make them all fluid and natural looking; why cover it up with clothes?

You're welcome
Cool concept - having two sets of ears. I wonder if that means they hear better, or if it would cause them to have overdeveloped other-senses because their hearing is jumbled? Either way - Brilliant.
And WOW! Thank you for the DevWatch! I always feel so honored when a great artist adds me. It's like Leonardo DaVinci or Milt Kahl came knocking at my door to tell me he likes my hats!

Was thinking about their evolution a lot more recently.(taking a physical anthropology class) I figure that they use to need it but now its more just part of sexual selection. Probably can pinpoint a sound source better than we can though. lol.

HAH! Yeah. Bet they can. I would love to see those ears in action. You know, how a cat or deer will just sit there twitching theirs ears... Can just imagine four of them moving around like a low-tech organic radar system. haha
Thanks ^-^ I put a lot of effort into what I make. I'll machine sew a lot of it. But I'll sit down for an hour or two and hand-stitch the ears and trim the fur so that they look absolutely perfect... But it's worth it in the end. I'm very proud of them
