Description

I never was a fan of David Bowie.

I always found him weird with his Ziggy Stardust persona, his music was ok but that’s about it.

Since two months or two I began to get more curious about Bowie. On the radio they talked about him a lot because of his exhibition in the Groninger Museum. I knew he had created a lot of different songs and that he’s considered being very influential in the rock music of the seventies and eighties I even wanted to go to David Bowie Is even though it's more than three hours by train..

And now he’s not with us anymore.

I never do portraits so I hope I did him some justice.. I went crazy with textures and things but in the end it was far too much - I still don't know if it works right now. I might revisit this thing these days, but have it for now. I just had to draw something for this Picasso of rock music.

Idk, i think the textures really work - they are a physical manifestation of the creative energy that swirled inside this person, that he used to create so much: great music, interesting personas, unique fashion statements; and his shows just had an amazing eye for design, from the makeup, to the costumes, to the staging, lights, everything.  I saw him on my 21st birthday at Day on the Green.  It was an amazing show - and not just the music.

Anyway, I knew it was Bowie right away when i saw the thumb.  I really like the color scheme, the blues, indigos and purples you used really capture the somber feeling we're all having with his loss.  Plus, Bowie understood that the underpinning of contemporary Euro-Am music, is the American blues, and he always was able to capture a certain essence of the blues with his music i think.

Thank you for your elaborate comment, I really appreciate it.

I'm glad you were able to recognize him immediately! I was a little worried that the textures would obscure his face too much.
