Description It was hot summer, the heat making mirages like bits of air turned to water on the hot asphalt outside. Candy melting weather. Reminds me of the old days with Kailey, spilling gummy bears on the driveway and watching them melt, translucent and deforming into sticky puddles.

Stock: Turn Silent by ~yellow-stock . I've loved this stock photo for ages but I never knew what to do with it. The above is an excerpt from a short story I wrote inspired by by the photo when first I saw it.

The final project for the intermediate painting class I've been taking this summer. I've never painted anything so large or so loosely... it was a challenge for me to ignore the imperfections and just let the painting be... but I had fun and am pleased with the results.

Acrylic on canvas 4'x4'3" (or maybe it's the other way around).

nice work but i think it looses something when you crop the original photo.
don't know why though ..

I see what you mean. There is a sense of composition in the original photo that is lost in the crop... the original activates the space better than the crop, I think in the figure's being slightly off center- the way her shoulder touches the edge of the image and the way the image continues down- allowing space for her gaze downward.
I chose to crop the photo as I did so that I could focus on the part of the image that held the most interest for me... and so that I would feel like I was doing something other than copying a photo.
But these are good things to think about. Thanks

yeah, would agree with the sense of space.
also think there is something with the colors that balance the image.
there's similar tones in her dress and the background that work together and soften the pink/green high contrast.
it's good that you wanted to change it in some way and i'm glad you did because it meant i thought about it for a minute ..
