Description
Skull Display CaseI built this over the holidays to accommodate my bird skull collection. Have over 60 skulls, all sourced from road victims or breeders losses.
Built out of pine with a walnut stain over the top to enrich the woods natural appearance. i had a piece of 3mm glass inserted into the frame - which has decorative sand blasted patterns into the edges. Had the common and scientific name plate engraved for for each bird. Overall truly a museum piece!

No i dont have a magpie goose skull, its pritty strict rules on bringing a magpie goose back from darwin. My dads going up there this year to shoot a couple at the start of the opening season but the department of sustainability said you cant, which dose not make sence to me.

i dont understand that either, i reckon if the skeleton is there people should be able to take it. Some pretty dumb rules there. Does that count for shooting the birds and bringing the body back for eating? that must be allowed or something is wrong there.

Well heres the dumbest part. You can easily bring back the carcus for food purposes. but illigal to bring back the skin. Dad was going to try to sneek em in but you cant have em in victoria know matter what. The fisheries are a bunch of wankers.
My theory is if you can shoot em you can have em, seems a waste. like i only want one to taxidermy. i dont see the problem

No skin? thats the best part well you learn something new everyday, thats what ive learned today, never knew you couldnt bring wild fowl like the magpie goose to different states. Does whistling ducks count as well?

Unfortunetly Yes, I have always yerned for a plumed whistling duck but the same rules apply. However i might be able to get a whistling duck from NSW one day. I've heard em up there and you can shoot ducks all year round if you have a permit. So i just have to be lucky i guess.

Very impressive! I would have thought a botanical name would have refered to plants only. Shouldn't it just be the scientific name?
Also what's the one with the bright red beak up the top right? It looks exotic.

LOL that's a really good point, botanical only refers to flora (coming from a horticulturist its a disgrace). Thank you for pointing that out i will change that now.
The one in the corner is a Dusky Moorhen, they are actually really common around wet lands. It is one of my favorites as well, unlike most birds the colouration in the beak does not fade, most parrot beaks fade.
