Description Made for but anyone can use if you want to

Let me first note that I'm NOT saying this is the way you SHOULD draw dragons. They're a (until proven otherwise) mythological creature that has no definite shape, color, etc, so there is no way to "properly" illustrate them. This is simply my way, my suggestion, to help other people find their own way. Mmkay?

Drawn, scanned in pieces (it kind of got cut off in places because of my scanner, sorry) colored in Photoshop, then stuck into one giant-ass file for convenience. For those of you without broadband, I'M SORRY for the ginormous file size

Enjoy!

That's a very good tutorial... one thing is you got some of the anatomy wrong (now I'm allowed to say this because I've been blinking studying it all friggin year!)
Quadriceps is at the front of the hindlimb, the hamstrings are at the back
Also, I am not sure what brachioradialis is... that should probably be extensors of carpus and digits, and IMO should be smaller than the flexors on the other side.
Brachialis you have labelled wrong - it should actually be in the same place as biceps... where you labelled it is the flexors of the carpus and digits

Sorry if that's nitpicking and I'm sure nobody else cares.. it's a really good tut, just trying to help with the details....

You've gone into the detail well here. I draw a lot of Dragon's heads on my writing pad when bored at college and I've noticed now some my techniques are similar to yours.

That's a really good tutorial. I haven't seen many dragon tutorials around, let alone such detailed ones, so it's interesting to see this. I like how you've drawn part individually, then also have a full image of the dragon, which helps to show what goes where. You did a good job with the anatomy, too, especially around the chest. For some reason I've always had a lot of problems with drawing chests.
I agree, too. There is no "set" way to draw a dragon, but here you've captured the basics well.

Yeah, now that you mention it, that's weird... with all the dragon artists on DA you'd think there'd be more tutorials out there. Hmm.
Thanks for the comment, 'tis much appreciated

zarathus In reply to Sastrei [2005-04-14 08:38:01 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, it seems a lot of people love dragons, but there are more tutorials on other things o.O It could just be that dragons don't have a "set" sort of form to them *shrugs*

And you're welcome

That's really well done! I get stuck with some parts of the dragon so it's nice to get it shown ^^ I mess up on the claws most of the time, lol.

Hey, wow! First dragon tutorial I've seen in a while. Nice job explaining wing mechanics and the extra toe. I need to master the extra toe actually <_<

Very nice job on the tutorial! I like how you've sectioned everything off to help one understand all of the components of the dragon. The coloring's also nice, and I agree that this dragon is not the definite form, as there are many other types of dragons, too. But as for Westerns, this is a very good dragon. Hope to see other tutorials from you in the future!

... It is just amazing thanks you so much
I wish that their was some way that I could repay you for all your trouble.
I have been trying to make my own things on dragons like the scales and stuff but I can't do it without the basic stuff like head shape and feet and stuff like that.
Hey maybe I can try to do the entire dragon now
*busts out pencil and starts drawing*
Thanks again
