Artist's Notes: A commission done for . This is the Space-Bat-Angel-Dragon described in Ted Hughes' Iron Man which the film The Iron Giant was loosely based on. The creature is described as a "terribly black, terribly scaly, terribly knobbly, terribly horned, terribly hairy, terribly clawed and terribly fanged" extra-terrestrial entity that descended from a red star that entered Earth's orbit. This description along with title of the creature reminded me of Dante Alighieri's depiction of Lucifer in the Divine Comedy so I turned to Gustave Dore's pieces done for the Inferno for inspiration. I also really like the idea of space dragons, likely because of the Might & Magic series of games and Godzilla's main rival, King Ghidorah, which also had a big influence of this design. While drawing this I was listening to Vektor a thrash metal band which evokes both the wonders and horrors of space through their music, I would highly recommend giving them a listen. This is definitely one of my more intricate works and was a lot of fun to do. I hope you all like it!
