*I decided to put the Enigma Character Series together mostly for the same reason I’ve put the other ones together, to save time and space. I have these pieces posted individually in my Original Character Designs folder, but I will be scrapping them shortly.*
#1- Mickey Warchild, aka Enigma, is a mutant with magic-based powers. She gives up her nomadic life as a thief after meeting Angel, and joins the Defenders, who are in the process of retooling. I have 34 Defenders stories written at the moment, and Enigma still has not actually worn this costume, but will receive it shortly. I wanted something between fantasy heroine and superhero, which is why the cape and leather boots/gloves. I’ve had questions about Enigma’s black facial markings, they are actual birthmarks she has had her entire life, not make-up or tattoos. Honestly I wish I had never added those, but it was the style at the time and it’s far too late the change now, so the mainstream reality (or 616-based) Enigma is the only one who has these.
#2- After the Defenders disband, Enigma will accompany her teammates Angel, Beast and Iceman, back to New York City as they form X-Factor with Cyclops and Jean Grey. I haven’t written these stories yet, of course, but I do have most of them plotted, and I do hope to get to them eventually, I love that huge steaming pot of comic melodrama. This is Enigma’s version of the original X-Factor costume in her standard black & purple color scheme. The team originally used these costumes when they fought in public as mutant vigilantes calling themselves the X-Terminators.
#3- X-Factor also passed themselves off as “mutant hunters for hire,” a ruse they used to track down and protect other young mutants, which eventually include characters like Artie, Leech, Rusty, Skids, Rictor and Boom Boom. I really think the “X-Terminators” name would have worked better for this side of their public persona, but it’s a little late to point that out now. Anyway, as seen in the Jean Grey Series [link] the original mutant-hunter costume is a blue jumpsuit with white piping, which included huge mole-man glasses instead of masks. I redesigned and updated it a little, and I like mine better.
#4- Eventually X-Factor realizes the whole mutant-hunting thing was a really bad idea, and they drop the duel persona. Following the events of the FALL OF THE MUTANTS crossover, the team gets new costumes which I like. I gave Enigma’s her usual color scheme, plus I removed the mask, because Mickey realizes she really has no reason to hide her identity and the mask is annoying.
To be continued...
