Description Update: This shows three different treatments. Probably not a fair comparison since the two on the right had a softer core to the plywood. The laser engraving, although deeper, did not char to a crisp black like the first piece. However, each represents a different cost in terms of laser time and finishing time. I am hoping to bring these down to a range of one or two dollars each. Currently, the one on the left would be around $5, the middle one $4, and the last one $3.

This piece is a prototype for a Token/Talisman intended for use in the 'Alchemifire Ritual: A Celebratory Rite of Transformation' (for more information about the ceremony itself, check out: [link] (Follow the link regarding the Pyromantics and the Alchemifire Ritual)

The token design is based on the 'caduceus' or staff of the messenger god Hermes/Mercury. Although often confused with the 'Rod of Asclepius' ( a single snake twined around a wand or rod) and thus mistakenly used as a symbol for the medical profession, it is actually a far more ancient emblem from early Greek mythology. Its earliest representations accompany Iris (messenger of Hera) even before depictions with Hermes.
As a further embellishment, this version also displays the symbols of the seven major chakras (energy centers) of Hindu Yogic tradition (in ascending order from root to crown) as well as a stylized halo of fire (representative of the transformative principles embodied in the ritual).
It was cut and engraved from thin 1/8" (3mm) poplar plywood using a 45 watt CO2 laser. Actual size 3" by 6" (7.5cm by 15.5cm)

You packed more religious symbolism in this thing than a cult meeting, but the craftsmanship is so fine and the design so wonderful that I think I will let it slide this time.

LOL Thanks! I may have to sell them as nightlights. They have a tendency to float a couple feet off the floor and give off an eerie glow. Now, if I can just find something to wrap them with; everything they touch transmutes into gold (I wish...)

Wow! I have always loved that symbol, and the idea to combine it with the chakra signs is just great! You will be participating in the ceremony? It sounds very interesting!

Thanks, I hope they will be pleased as well. I doubt if I will be able to attend this year's festival (It will be in Ohio during the summer solstice), but it sounds like fun and I may get an opportunity at another time or location.
