Description
This is how I proportion. It's really easy once you get the hang of it. It works with all head lengths. Hope this is useful for anyone who has problems with proportions in the manga style.Related content

Ah thanks for making this. I've gotten better on how to do faces but drawing them in proportion I still find a bit hard This way looks easier than other ways I've tried so far.

This is very true. I was so used to trying to measure characters by heads that eventually I began to get frustrated... especially when trying to draw people (often without their consent) in real life. Many people just didn't fall into those proportions. I read in a book a technique similar to this, and found it really does work. It's a pain to figure when you start moving body parts from astraight standing position, but knowing where a character's arms really land in the "head scale" can help alot.

I'm glad that you keep in mind those things! I will be making a tutorial on poses that aren't straight measurements from the basic standing pose. (In the undetermined future.)

Good reference, but I'm paranoid that people will use rules or even a computer to validate my proportions.
Here, the camera is a 45~60 deg from the top, so she looks shorter, [link]

SAYno2U In reply to SHiNKiROU-org [2010-12-11 19:40:16 +0000 UTC]
People validate proportions all the time using what feels natural to them. It if looks normal then they will accept it as proportioned. Picky people like me will take my finger and measure out proportions on a drawing without the use of a computer. Well, I used to do it that way- now I can just eye-ball most of the time.
I'm not sure what the link is for since it told me to log-in. But don't be paranoid! People will do what they will. Draw for yourself, and just hope that other people like it. There are a lot of people that exaggerate different parts of the body because that is their style. Don't think to much about it! After people master the basics they can twist it to their own style while still achieving balance.

Thanks, I think I am already reliable with proportions. Sometimes I found when I added cloths, the proportions mess up.
Well, here is a working link: [link]

Ahhhh. When forshortening, especially in this pose, the wrists would still be somewhere alined with the crotch- and the hands near the upper-middle thigh. I would make the arms a bit shorter if you follow. It would also help if you would define the knees to get a better illusion that your looking down at her. Shortening the arms slightly, and defining the knees, would strengthen the illusion your aiming for. Hope this is okay to say.
If you would like to understand more I would be willing to redraw your drawing with key notes like I did for this tutorial.

Hmm, nice idea for a tutorial. Mind, though, that the text is laid out in a rather confusing manner, and not particularly easy to view on a screen... Tutorials are best kept neat to help people understand.

Depends on how much the individual puts work into it. It has the same amount of information it would have even if I spent a lot of time on it! I just laid out the words where it fit, and apparently the groups that accepted the tutorial say it is FINE, or else they wouldn't have accepted it.
Lady, no offense but if you don't like it just don't look at it. If you can't read it don't read it! I'm not changing what I did just for you. =.= Other people have found it useful, if you haven't-- I can't teach you to learn. If you think you can do a better job then go ahead! Maybe I will find it more useful than mine!!

Hmm. Maybe I'll take you up on the challenge.
But I wasn't actually attacking what you did. I offered constructive criticism, and... Well, I guess if you weren't looking for any maybe I should have kept my mouth shut and not pressed the matter, but that kind of response from you--where you made it absolutely clear that you did not care one way or another--just feels wrong to me, in someone who's offering assistance of a sort to other people.
Anyway. I should probably be quiet already, I got a little carried away.

I never thought about a highest point for the knee, that's why my characters allways look awkward in sitting positions... And my handwriting is good, my letters are big and round, but I just don't know what happens, I think that when I'm making a tut it gets shy, that's the only possible explanation!

SAYno2U In reply to IngridPin [2010-12-10 02:24:28 +0000 UTC]
Maybe so! Next time you make a drawing try talking out loud what you are doing with you drawing, and explain to yourself why--each and every time you add or change something. You may find that there could be more explaining to do.

I like you, you have some weird but logical methods. And I have nothing to lose in doing it. I already have the weird habit of having a one-person conversation, so my mom already think I'm crazy, talking a bit more won't make any difference...ha,ha
