Description ON BRINDLE MERLE
I know that my illustration is far from the best example, and to avoid discrepancies and any non-factual information on my part, here are some photos of brindle merle dogs.

Brindle Merle 3 Brindle Merle 4
Brindle Merle 5 Brindle Merle 6
Brindle Merle 7 Brindle Merle 8

While I'm working on my North Atlantic Spitz group, I'm putting together color and pattern guides that will not only work for my Spitz, but also for any other realistic dog breed.

Hopefully this will be helpful to people. I tried to make it as simple and as clear as possible, but eh. ^^

Let me know if there are any typos, wrong information, or unclear information, and I'll do my best to fix it and/or explain it.

If you have any suggestions for future guides, let me know! I already plan on doing one about patterns (agouti series, brindle, merle, etc.), body types (ears, tails), and then some small things (nose color / type, eye color, etc.), but if you have anything specific that you want answered or think needs to be addressed, let me know!

Disclaimer: I am, by no means, saying that any of the following information is 100% correct, is worded the best way, or is the absolute best portrayal of the colors. This is an accumulation of what I know about genetics and what I have seen based on photos over the years.

Part I: Red and Black Hairs
Part II: Agouti, Extension, and Black
Part III: Merle and Merle Modifiers
Part IV: White Spotting, Ticking, and Roan

Thanks. ^^ But my breed doesn't carry the harlequin gene. This is more of a general guide for dog genetics, and since I had the NAS lines available, I just used them.

Harlequin is really nice to look at. ^^ There are some merles that should pop up in the gene pool every now and then, though. So you have that to look forward to. xP

Agreed with above. The brindle only shows where there is red in the coat. The dog would have to be sable in order for it to be noticeable, and then the entire coat would be affected. In the first example you can see the brindle in the diluted parts of the coat, implying it is probably sable/brindle with the merle gene.

Actually, brindle merle won't usually have that distinct brinling on the brindle patches. It tends to look like sable merle with a lot of black mixed in.

I've seen it both ways, really. I think it depends on whether it's brindle or reverse brindle. This puppy has clearly defined merle patches: [link] On the other hand, this dog doesn't: [link]

The only visible difference that I see is that one has black striping and the other has red.

Yup, but that puppy's patches will probably get more mottled with age- the clearly defined black markings on a yellow-based merle (ie brindle or sable) will usually fade. There are exceptions, but they're rare. And longhaired dogs like your imaginary breed here don't have clearly defined brindling to begin with - take a look at brindle poms and GS.

Probably. x3 I think I've got it mostly fixed, and I'll try to remember to update the file later. And thanks for reminding me about the longer coat. I just so happen to have an import that's brindle, and I definitely forgot to mottle it a bit more. xD

(BTW, reverse brindle and brindle aren't different, genetically )
