Description With complete honesty, I ended up enjoying this film more than I thought I would. Mainly thanks to the main four actresses. I haven't even watched the original Ghostbusters, but I still had a pretty fun experience with this.

The first film wasn't even THAT great, the sequel was markedly better on multiple fronts. Especially in it's characterization which was just a tad lacking in the original and only mitigated by the actor's top-notch performances.

That's good because apparently, we're not allowed to have an opinion about the movie unless we hate it because if someone like yourself likes it, some jackass will come in Bully you for liking something they don't.

I haven't seen the Reboot yet, and I don't intend to go to the movie theatre for it, because judging by the trailer it's not a movie that whose comedy is along my taste, so I'm not willing to spend money on a movie I likely won't enjoy. With that said, I will give it a shot once it's available as VOD or on tv at some point, because it's unfair to judge a movie before having seen it in full to form an opinion on it.

Anyway, I like this picture. You seem to have captured the characters' personalities in the facial expressions quite well.

You should definitely watch the original Ghostbusters at some point, it's a classic and considered among the best comedies of the 80's. I know of no person who watched the very first movie and didn't enjoy it on some level, the dialogues especially are fantastic.

Actually, the trailer didn't capture the movie at all. The movie itself is quite amazing. I watched it in 3D and WHY DOES EVERY CUTE DUDE NAMED KEVIN WEARING GLASSES HAVE TO GET POSSESED '~'

sunshineandlolipops In reply to EJwolfyXD [2016-07-17 12:01:20 +0000 UTC]

That does sound promising. And I did conclude from the somewhat positive reviews from people like Manohla Dargis and J.R. Kinnard that the trailer might not have been a fair or good representation of the movie. On the other hand,Β  Cinemascore reports that audiences gave the film an average grade of "B+" on an A+ to F scale, which isn't that great by Cinemascore standards (a majority of movies get an A or A+ on Cinemascore), then again the recent Warcraft movie also got only a B+ on Cinemascore, and I ended up absolutely enjoying that movie.

Anyway, as I said, I'm definitely going to watch it on VOD or tv, and I never hate a movie before having seen it in full. I just don't feel confident spending money on a movie ticket (which are quite expensive these days) on a movie I'm not sure if I'll end up enjoying. Comedies especially are always a very subjective thing, since everyone has a different sense of humour. Anyway, I appreciate your recommendation, but it's also quite possible the two of us have a different sense of humor, since we are likely quite apart in terms of age (I'll be 30 tomorrow ). Plus, I don't live in North America so my sense of humour is likely to also be somewhat different due to culture. I'm not saying that to sound patronizing of course, your taste is as valid as mine, I'm just saying that it's quite possible we are amused by different things (and that's fine) Β

That's fine, to each their own, it's just comedy, I don't judge. Besides since I haven't seen the movie, I don't know how the joke was framed anyway. If it made you laugh, that's all that counts.

So far it's exceeded both Sony's estimate for the first weekend and the industry estimate, and we still have a few hours of weekend to go.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

sunshineandlolipops In reply to maxvision92 [2016-07-17 21:52:28 +0000 UTC]

Correct. However the movie had a budget of $144 million and in promotion and marketing $100 million was spent (which isn't an unusual sum for marketing these days), so it'll have to make more than $244 million to start making a profit. I'm by no means saying it can't do that, I'm just saying the next 2 weeks will be decisive.

How does 65 million dollars sound as a start?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

sunshineandlolipops In reply to maxvision92 [2016-07-18 11:38:13 +0000 UTC]

It does sound very good indeed. But I already read that it made $65.1 million on its first weekend back when I wrote my previous post. It's just that this year saw many movies that had a fantastic debut weekend, and then dropped very significantly on its second weekend, "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" being the most famous example. I'm not saying Ghostbusters 2016 will too, or that it won't, I'm not predicting. All I'm saying is we won't know how well this movie truly did until its second and third weekend. I don't wish the movie badly, so if it still does well on its second and third weekend, more power to its cast.Β

I'm just gonna say you don't know how Hollywood numbers work. $65 million, final tally for this weekend, is an INCREDIBLE box office score. Ten million over what Hollywood projected, and TWENTY-FIVE MILLION more than Sony themselves projected.

which means absolutely nothing if they dont make a profit

SinkCandyCentral In reply to Match25 [2016-07-19 03:31:52 +0000 UTC]

Insult is harsh. They're not going to break even on this movie. Maybe they will barely. this cost 144 million.

BUT. BUT. It isnt the worst thing that couldve happend to ghostbusters. There is a new cartoon coming out soon.

sunshineandlolipops In reply to SinkCandyCentral [2016-07-19 16:23:59 +0000 UTC]

$144 million is the budget, but there's also $100 million on promotion and advertizing. So it'd have to make more than $244 million to make a profit. I'm not convinced it can't do that, I think there's a possibility it can. We will know in about 2 weeks.

πŸ‘: 1 ⏩: 1

SinkCandyCentral In reply to sunshineandlolipops [2016-07-19 18:01:27 +0000 UTC]

Two completely different markets. A movie bomb is still a bomb.

But you are right. If the merch makes like double what the movie costs it does make sense to make another.

And Sony said another IS MOST DEFINITELY HAPPENING.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

sunshineandlolipops In reply to SinkCandyCentral [2016-07-19 22:11:16 +0000 UTC]

You misunderstood me, I actually meant the $100 million on promotion and advertizing that has been spent on getting word about the movie out. So that's part of Sony's expenditures, not profits. I didn't mean the merchandise.

And I actually meant to indicate it has to make $244 million in profits to break even. But I actually do think this movie might do that in the box office, even without taking merchandisee into account. The first weekend at least was very good, we'll see how it does in its second and third weekends.

Yeah I know Sony has said that, but movie studios often say a sequel is "definitely happening" only to change their minds later. Ultimately they'll make their decision about the sequel based on the final numbers, like any other studio would. With that said, if the movie does the box office numbers I expect it to do, then yes, I expect a sequel.

It's still early ahead of the movie's 2nd weekend, and the movie won't open in a lot of the overseas markets until later in August. We won't truly know for sure if it flopped or was a success until around August 8-10, so both groups of people, the ones who like the movie and who dislike the movie, should just relax about the box office and drink some tea until then.
