How is this too cartoony? I can think of several RPGs where this would fit right in!
It definitely has an abandoned and spooky vibe to it, like good adventure settings of this type should have.
You know, as opposed to: "You enter a room. It is perfectly clean. The butler asks if you would like to hand over your cloak..."

Thank you..It is in fact cartoonier than the sample art I was asked to work from..I guess I could not help it to give it a little twist.. What they wanted was not appealing to me as an artist I suppose. I should've refrain myself from even trying out.

No, Don't say that you shouldn't have tried. At least unless the project itself didn't interest you. What if they had liked your interpretation enough to inspire them to use your style instead? or if they liked it enough that they felt that there was room for compromise and had asked you to try again?
And, at the very least, you now have another piece for your professional portfolio!
