Description
More art made for my work in progress Webcomic Tales from Caelia, an image depicting the various disciplines within the Kingdom of Sol.Some more info:
Vexillum: Mostly recognized for their ability to lift spirits and lead teams, they are trained in managing troops and carrying out strategy and are often either trained from birth in this discipline, or they decide to go into the discipline from another after getting experience on the field. They are highly proficient in wielding the arming sword and buckler and they all carry flag spears that can be used as anti mount weaponry or as a way to defend choke points and keep the enemy at bay. They are mostly equipped with plate chauses, sabatons, flat cross helms, gambeson, chain-mail shirts, and surcoats bearing the colors of the kingdom. They are trained in the use of heavier armor to account for the lower amount of defensive weaponry they are trained in. However they are accustomed to fighting with a group behind them so when forced into a situation when they are forced to duel or fight multiple at once they are easily defeated.
Imperium: A defensive soldier highly trained in the usage of polearms either by themselves or with shields. They can quickly organize themselves to create shield walls and keep enemies at bay. They are arms of the body that makes up the army. Used in attacking and defending at a stationary point. They exclusively fight at the frontlines and are equipped with plated arms and legs with either laminar or even metal curiasses (for higher ranked Imperium) and are trained in any polearms. This includes pikes, spears. warhammers, halberds, poleaxes, etc. They are usually easy to produce due to polearms being very easy to learn compared to other weapons and defensive technique being the only thing that must be learned. Their weakness is that due to their armor and weaponry they are limited in their range of movement and can be exploitable if you get past their reach.
Virtus: The backbone of the Sol Army, a balanced grunt type warrior that is the easiest to produce and train. They have basic training in most types of melee weapons not excelling in any specific category. Many of the more experienced fall back on the Longsword for their choice of weapon, they wear full chainmail, with leather boots, and round open bascinet helmets. Used to fill the ranks and are primarily used to charge enemies or provide more space between the archers and Imperium troops, They excel in group battles when led by a good leader. They suffer when at low morale and if they are not backed up by more specialized disciplines (they act as multipliers of one fighting force rather than pure additions) and can be easily outmatched if their weapon is the equivalent or at a disadvantage in a isolated fight situation.
Sagitta: The most dexterous of the disciplines preferring ranged weaponry such as javelins, bows, and crossbows with a shortsword as backup. They usually use light armor and are responsible for moving quickly and picking out targets 1 by 1. They are also responsible for covering for the main forces. They’re often placed in their own units but are trained to be able to operate on their own if need be. In a 1v1 situation they usually have an advantage due to their physical fitness training, but can easily be overwhelmed by a defensive shield bearing opponent. Although they are highly adaptable most of them tend to be reserved and not make good leaders and their mysterious nature can sometimes make them hard to trust. Another thing to note is that they are the hardest to train and produce.
