This is nature personified, isn't it? With animals it's survival, kill or be killed. With trees it's about giving food or shelter. Rocket might be a surly house pet even for a good natured tree. I give credit for his steampunky goggles to concept artist Charlie Wen. I know they couldn't do it without hindering his emoting, but it would be a cool look in a short scene. Groot in the movie seemed a tad conservative. I think a longer neck, chin and wilder head would have pushed his exotic nature and be visually dynamic.
