I don't understand the argument. O.o I'm a veterinary major and my main focus is reptiles (snakes, lizards, and so on). Dream works has some anatomy problems, but the legs seem right to me. If you compare to stocky, real-life lizard like an alligator or crocodile, you will see that the shoulders move in the same way as the night fury, and while they are swimming they are either flat at their sides or a little under them (like your flight picture).
I know this really isn't my argument, but maybe this will help?
