“Clean this shit up,” Fetch snaps to Erick, gesturing at all their dirty dishes strewn about the kitchen. They’ve only been here a few days and it’s already a huge mess. He gets up from the table and almost tips it over while trying to avoid bumping into the counter. Fuck this place. A couple of Mateo’s guys went looking for Fetch at his regular address, just like Lavender said, and he couldn’t risk going back just yet.

This hideout may be a shithole but at least it’s temporary. They just have to stay here for a little while longer. Fetch maneuvers his way past Erick, out into the tiny living room to take a closer look at that news report on the TV. Erick picks up the dishes without question. He’s been perfectly obedient since Fetch got him back, actually. And just a little too quiet. The boy scrubs a plate with a sponge while leaning back far enough to catch a sliver of the TV screen. Fetch turns up the volume. It’s something big.

“... Wong is finally home safe after more than two weeks in captivity. The whereabouts of the suspect, identified as Lavender Rhodes, are currently unknown after evading police custody...”

Fetch coughs. Well then. Lavender did it. She actually did it. She got her ransom and let Thomas go and disappeared without a trace.

“T-thomas is safe?” Erick puts down the sponge and steps closer to the TV. He looks at Fetch with big grey eyes filled with relief. The man looks back at him. He remembers the moment when he found out Erick’s dad wasn’t going to pay the ransom after all. Then he remembers when he caved and kept Erick anyways.

“Yeah, he’s safe,” Fetch murmurs. He shuts off the TV.

“But- but I want to know what happened!”

“Too bad.” He advances and corners Erick in the kitchen, forcing him back up against the sink. The boy squeaks in fear with Fetch looming over him.

“Finish this,” he says, motioning to the dishes, and he turns away. Fetch closes himself in his bedroom, leaving Erick alone.

Bzzt. A new text message.

Fetch peers down at his phone, squinting at the notification. It’s from an unlabeled number. He instantly recognizes it by now- it’s Lavender’s number.

The message contains two simple sentences: FOR YOUR TROUBLES. DONT CROSS ME AGAIN. Followed by… coordinates.

He wasn’t sure what he was expecting to find at the marked location. Maybe he thought he’d meet Lavender herself.

He drove all this way. Locked Erick in the van just to be safe, and parked not too far. They’re in the middle of a forest, all dried up from the lack of rain this season.

There’s nobody else around. Lavender isn’t here. Fetch checks the coordinates again, to make sure he’s at the right place. There’s no mistaking it, this is the spot, but he doesn’t see anything out of place. Unless Lavender sent him on another wild goose chase- Wait, the dirt’s color is different in that patch over there- like it was turned over recently. Like something was buried.

Fetch trudges back to the van and pounds on the window, making Erick jump.

“Get your ass out here. And grab that shovel,” he orders.

“Y-yes, sir!”

Fetch makes him dig while he keeps a lookout. Mostly, he’s watching out for Lavender. He still thinks she’s out here. They arrived just before sunset, and now the sun’s gone down behind the treeline. There’s still a reddish glow that permeates the branches.

“Um, I- I think... “ Erick pops out of the shallow hole in the ground and tugs at his sleeve. Fetch flips his attention to the crater and jumps in. There’s a small black canvas bag still half-buried. He uncovers the rest of it with his hands, and carefully picks it up from the dirt. It’s not booby trapped or anything, it’s just a little gift. He opens it.

… Fuck, that’s a decent amount of money. If Lavender got the full 100k from Thomas’s ransom, she just peeled off a good fraction of it for Fetch. Not enough to justify what she did, but enough to make Fetch consider accepting her apology.

He picks up one of the stacks of bills- it’s all 20’s. There’s a note on the top bill, scrawled in purple sharpie.

THIS AINT AN APOLOGY YOU DICK

Goddamn, what is it with this woman? It’s like she wants him to retaliate.

… Of course she wants him to retaliate.

Looks like it’s his turn again.
