I see alot of long descriptions on what punk is.Than I see your sweet shirt that is very simple. And Im just gonna say my very short way of describing punk. Its not the cloths, its not the music, its not the hair,or the tattoos. Its a state of mind. Those who can,for lack of better wordage,be called punk simple use the listed to express themselves.I like black, its just a favorite color.I like punk music because of the message and meaning, and i like the arm bands cause, well i just do.I dont have dyed hair,i dont have peirceings or tattoos. So what? Im not punk? I dotn know.
But its a state of mind. And that state happens to be Fuck you,I dont care. XD
and wow that was longer than i thought it would be XD

Oh well this is fucking true, and i really love the quote from punkmuppet too. Also when i often wear spikes and such while having a green mohawk i have to say that this isn't punk. Im not an oldschool punk and i don't claim to be, i consider myself punk because of my love to the music and the message of the songs.
The only good thing at this fashion crap is that it would go away with the time and then all thoose pseudo punks that simply are "punk" because it's fashion at the time will also leave, like they never had existet.
But it is a really sad thing for sure

Never thought of putting it on a t-shit before!
I get so fed up with seeing Anarchy, Punk Chick, Punk Rock t-shirts in high street stores. Winds me up no end.
According to some i'm a bit of an elitest, but its only cos i care so much about the scene i feel part of, but i hate it that shops are using something that is meant to be so unbranded and turning it into a brand for the unaware masses

I would buy that shirt but the tax would o to the government, and it my pal Reno's words "What's the point of being anti-government then paying tax which goes to the government?"

Well, the tax would actually go to "MY" government (Australias) and considering the parasitical sycophantic fear-and-hate-mongering gutless tapeworms that we have in power at the moment (John Howard Inc) then that's probably even worse, so I see ya point. Anyway, thanks for commenting

Those are just my opinions on the whole thing, its probably very different for others, but... yeah...
If "I don't hate you, but I do hate the way you treat each other" sounds familiar, I think it was Lars from Rancid who originally said it, on the website, that was something that inspired me to write the thing.

punkmuppet In reply to scart [2003-08-24 09:09:31 +0000 UTC]
This little thing attempts to describe my views on punk, and also to dispel some myths some of the new wave of "punks" seems to have on the punker's way of life. And also to explain why my name is PunkMuppet when I don't listen to a whole lot of "punk"...
Punk is not being antisocial, punk is not elite, punk is not exclusive, punk is not the clothes you wear, or the colour of your hair, punk is rebelling against people who want the world to be elite, open up all you wannabe punks, spiking your green hair and spitting does not make you punk, wearing Dead Kennedy's tshirts does not make you punk. Hating Rancid's new album because they've "sold out" punk, definately does not make you punk. Punk was never meant to be an underground thing, it only started off that way because no big record label had the balls to put something controversial on the market. Nowadays we do have labels dedicated to signing controversial acts, and when a band gets signed to them all they get is abuse from so called punks who think any band with a barcode on their album is selling out, and who think punk is a dress code. These record labels of course do have their downsides, I mean Eminem and Marilyn Manson were never going to get signed on artistic merit now were they?
But if you really want to be punk, find something that really bothers you about living in your area, and do something to change it, use music to put forward a message or idea of something you're against, and promote ideas for change, and you're punk no matter what sound you're making. Don't look for a derelict building and stand beside it with your jeans all ripped, stay true to yourself and your way of life, thats the way to get respect from your peers. If you think that writing three-chord, anti government songs will make you punk, and make the real punks, the ones without the ripped jeans covered in chains, respect you, then please do us all a favour and don't ever go near a notepad with a pen thinking of words that rhyme with "capitalist". Punk is all about change, and by continuing all these punk stereotypes you're destroying exactly what it is you are trying to be.
I don't hate you, but I do hate the way you treat each other, and your reasons for treating each other so badly is hypocritical, seeing as punk is so inclusive, the original movement never set out to exclude anybody, and now its turned into a mass clique that will exclude you for listening to a band thats ever been in the top 10.
If you're wondering what I've done to change anything that lets me call myself a punk, or even discuss the topic of punk, then nothing really, if I've done anything worth mentioning then you're reading it. I'm writing this in the hope that I'll stop even just one wannabe who thinks its punk to spit all over the place and listen to the Damned really loud until the neighbours complain.
Okay I've been planning this for a while, finally got round to posting some of it, I may add more when I feel moved to, but yeah, hopefully it'll turn the lil kids away from "punk" ideals faster than Blink 182 got them into it.

This makes more relevant and well honed points about PUNK than anything else I've read for a long time and it's also one of the most well written pieces I've come across.
BTW, I beg to differ re: some of Mansons work, as an antagonist anyway, but that's the beauty of diversity
Very well said, thanks for posting it, hope you post it elsewhere as well so as many people as possible get to read it.
Cheers

yeah I've nothing against Manson really, or Eminem, other than the fact that they, like Blink 182 and such, are easily acessible forms of whatever genre they claim to represent. Whereas to me they're nothing more than pop, and all the fans thinking that they're anything less than ordinary for liking them.
I don't know why I take on this wordy way when I type about this, I'm not normally like that lol.

scart In reply to punkmuppet [2003-08-24 14:03:59 +0000 UTC]
I know what you mean.
I think it comes down to the fact that when you talking or typing about something you actually care about, you take the time to make sure that your opinion is clear and that you've made the points you intended to. We put a lot more effort into the things that matter to us so that we're not misunderstood. The rest of the time things are nearly done on automatic, least that's how it feels sometimes.
Or maybe that's just me
Anyways, cheers

Glad you liked it. Had the idea years ago, before I was into digital art, of a music note with spikes, i.e. punk.
The text just comes from seeing corporate ****stains try to sell the world it's own s**t back over and over again, without ever thinking about what it really means.

Heh, exactly! Punk is more a state of mind (haha) than an easily packaged, sanitized product for the masses. Sure, if you want to dress "punk," that's cool, but it's not what punk is about. It's not overpriced, oversized pants... it's rebellion. I think at this stage of its "life," punk is in desperate need of dirtying and reinfection, as you would put it. There's so much crap, and so many posers... I don't care if people became punks late in the movement, it's the people who claim they're punk but don't care about the ideas behind it that bother me. The people who just dress that way because it's "cool," the people who don't even realize there's anything more to punk than fashion and Blink 182.
...wait, this comment box isn't a place for me to ramble about punk, is it? Eh.
...Is this t-shirt for sale somewhere?
