Description 1. proximity
this finite summer burns as a unified whole. i watch
starlings and try to unlearn old perceptions. It seems plausible
that nothing can ever truly be categorised.
It is said that the human brain experiences divisions based
on closeness. This theory
Can be applied not just to visual discernment
But to human communication. Is the dot
An outlier, or part of something
Yet uncharted? Thus the nature of God
concludes itself.

2. similarity
Birds of a feather. Physical attributes which are of course
Recognised through faulty mechanisms
Can be arbitrarily decided. This and that. And so on
And so forth. Routine is a myth and so is addiction. I
Smoke cigarettes on the patio
And cannot be distinguished
From a house fire.

3. closure
8pm tuesday my boss buys me marlboros. This sketches out
The shape of something, visible to the naked eye
Like stars in the countryside. Many things can be determined by chance.
We fill in gaps out of habit which means that we
See pictures that do not exist. We recognise and cling to any
Known invariable that is available to us
But this draws upon an entirely different theory of psychology.
Allegedly if ancient humans caught a glimpse of a predator
They knew to run, without any more information.
Perhaps this means that closure can never be found. To form a whole
On the basis of a part
Means that a body
Can never be more than itself.

4. continuity
We follow many paths. This is how design must work
Composition pulls together many elements
Not to form a whole, but to form an illusion. This is the
Illusion: so any river can be considered the jordan,
And any two point perspective reasoning
Can be expanded; thus, so can any three. The concept
Of linearity is deceiving. Catalog what you must and with care.
Separation of unrelated stimuli through overlap because
Of structural familiarity
Breeds contempt.

5. connectedness
Optical flow precedes and exceeds sharpness and illumination.
Obscurity presents no barrier to the eye
With which to contend
When direction provides the necessary frame of reference
For distinction. Movement can be recognised without other stimulus
Such as shape or colour. Thus we are characterised as herd
Rather than by nature. Our organs begin life as cells like any other
And learn their task by the development and differentiation
Of the body.
