Brilliant concept for sure. When I first saw the tubs or whatever they are I looked, and looked to puzzle out which way they were supposed to viewed, but hey its art after all.
The shading definitely adds depth to the piece, but I think that the person himself should be larger, not by a huge amount though, just enough to add more presence. Since you've concentrated the highlights there and centered in on the negative space, I assume all the focus goes on the person. I feel that it needs to be assessed a little with an actual human figure, I understand this is abstract, but imho it could have more of an effect if the person was slightly more believable.
This may not be the best suggestion in many peoples opinions, but the result of doing it this way would please even those who at first would be against it. I think the figure after being corrected structurally a bit, and resized a bit, should have some kind of value, not necissarily with complete light or darks though, more of a matte gray sort of shading.
And overall I think if the brushstrokes had been a tad bit more carefully placed in a few places, in my opinion it might have made the impact and technique go up to at least a 4 and a 1/2 if not a 5 altogether.
You don't have to take my advice, obviously, but since you've requested a critique I tried to do my best in giving you one that could help in the future, if not let me know.

This plays with my perception of foreground and background. For a second I can fool myself into thinking the figure can pull themselves out of the hole to the light. Then it flips around and there is no escape.
