Description Sci-fi writer and futurist, Arthur C. Clarke, famously said that "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic."  But I'd still like to see a duel between a bazooka and a magic missile.

And for some reason, medieval times and Middle-earth times seem to be interchangeble in terms of speech and dress.  It's like Robin Hood and the rest of the Middle Ages were going through a huge "Retro-Frodo" phase.

What the magicians of old don't want you to know is that they invented gunpowder right after fire. But it was flashy and spectacular and nobody thought of putting it in a little closed container and lighting it on fire in there...

...Well, someone did, but they didn't live very long afterward. So it took thousands of years before someone else came up with the idea of putting that container inside another, stronger container that was pointed at someone else's vitals.

Progress is weird that way.

It'd be a while before the magicians of old advanced from pulling rabbits from hats to catching bullets between their teeth.

PT Barnum sped that right along, though. Catalysts: that's what I'm talking about.
