Hi Ryan,
You have a nack for wacky compositions, but I think you need to control lighting better to get to the top.
i think in this (excellent!) image the subject (=girl) merges somwhat into the BG. There are two different lighting tools that could have improved it:
1. Exposure difference - IMHO, the BG is too overexposed for being a shadow area - I would have tried to expose it about -1 stop from the main exposure. In you case it would mean (assuming you need f-16 for proper flash exposure) a shutter-speed of 1/400, beyond your camera's X sync, so all you could have done was shoot at 1/250 for 1/4 stop less, which is hardly noticable. Assuming flash was at full power, the only other option is moving it closer and shooting at a smaller f stop...
2. Keep the same exposure, but add an accent light - an overexposed halow, made by a top stronger light - in this case it would have been problematic if you are already at maximum flash output. The Climb is an example of this technique, although its not that obviuos there.

thanks for the comments. it's probably the first time anyone bothered to give a legitimate critique. i think it's great to hear different viewpoints whether i agree with them or not. as for lighting, your suggestions about bringing the background down on all 3 shots was not the look i was going for, but i definately had more power in the strobes if i needed it. in fact, i probably brought the background up a half stop or so in post if anything. using the look you have in climb would have been too much of a studio influence and would have destroyed the whole point of being on location. either way, i appreciate the suggestions and hope you keep watching, thanks.

I understand you completely, and I think I said it was my opinion, BTW, the pumpkin had the difference I was looking for...
I think that without making the studio effect to obvious they could have worked better for me at different times of the day.
Anyway - I take this opportunity to convey my appreciation the the way you work to control your subjects and conditions, where most people just point and shoot, sometimes going to the extreme of popping their on camera fill flash.
I'll definitly keep watching!

perfect composition, light, structure and pose. You have an amazing eye. Advanced critique - is it super sharp. Check the focal point. Is it on her eyes? You got a hot camera, what lens you use?

yeah, at that distance, if her body's sharp, her eyes are as well, i'm at about f11 so the fall off wouldn't be that harsh to drop her eyes if i focused on her body. the lens is a canon 24-70 2.8 L series
