Description
Corel Painter. Reference photos were used. The framed pictures are of: Little Boy - 1945, Fat Man - 1945, Trinity - 1945, Oak - 1957. The woman in the chair was also photo referenced, but it is an image I've had saved for a long time - I'm unsure of the original.Interesting fact time:
"The bombs killed as many as 140,000 people in Hiroshima and 80,000 in Nagasaki by the end of 1945."
Paraphrased:
"The release was uneventful, and the gravity bomb known as "Little Boy", a gun-type fission weapon, took 57 seconds to fall from the aircraft to the predetermined detonation height about 1,900 ft above the city. It created a blast equivalent to about 13 kilotons of TNT. The U-235 weapon was considered very inefficient, with only 1.38% of its material fissioning."

If that's not considered "efficient," I'm scared to know what is.
EDIT: Holy crap, thanks for the DD! I have another work related to this image on Youtube, for those interested: www.youtube.com/watch?v=filmxD…

this is truly amazing! At first, I thought it was a photograph, but then I looked closer and saw the little brush strokes.

Very... dispiriting, disturbing and revolting. How people could do that?! And very... beyond belief. How could you do this great work?!

Great concept and wonderful execution.
It's really scary to know what's considered efficient, and I hope there would never be a day when the "more efficient" weapon is used..

Yes, I wonder how much destruction would have happened if the entire bomb fissioned?

Interesting fact: my Grandad (he was rear gunner) was flying over in the Lancaster Bomber from England to Japan when they were radioed to turn back as the Atomic Bomb had just been dropped! That is chilling!

Wow, that is really some scary stuff! I have a strange fascination with that whole era of history... in a twisted way I think it would have been really amazing to see one of the bombs go off! I have a family relative that was a witness to the testing of that years ago however, and his eyesight is terrible from it. Still, it would be really interesting to see.

It is, i thought it sent a shiver down my spine when he told me about it recently. It's not something he brags about and i really admire him for that, can you imagine the fear they must have felt? But you know the sad thing about all this is we just don't learn. Also Einstein was horrified when he was told how his discovery was going to be used! I myself spent a short time in the British Army and had NBC training (Nuclear Biological Chemical warfare)and all i can say is i hope it never happens because this time the human race won't stand a chance! If a bomb was to be dropped in London now the heat would be so great it would melt the top of St Pauls Cathederal, thats a fact that has stayed with me since the training!
Nice rendering of the painting by the way and use of symbolism.

very thought provoking. It's a moving image but disturbing at the same time. It certainly conveys a message - dunno, there's just something about people in gas masks that I find terribly eerie..
very nice work and many congratulations on the DD

I think maybe it's eerie because it's a confusion between what is humanity and what is machine? At least for me, gas masks sit in a strange boundary between the two. I have a huge fascination with them. D:
