Description This is the complete one half of the bridge and it shows the general layout, with the captain and xo seated at top and center. The pilots and flight crew sit directly in front and below. To either side are the big holographic displays with operators for targeting, astrogation, strategic and tactical plots etc. 10 cre per display and 40 in all. Directly in front of them are damage control operators 3 to each side and 12 in all. On the upper balcony to either side of the holo spheres are the rest of the bridge crew. Master gunners for mainguns, CIWS and Tactical battery CAG overlooking the holodispalys. Further to the sides and along the rear bulkhead is engineering, environment, comunications etc. This is still a preliminary seating arrangment and will likely change as I still have a lot to do before this compartment is done. The other side of the bridge will be occupied by a secondary crew minus the highest officers and flight crew. The idea being that each crew has 180 degrees of universe to contend with and operate relatively independent of eacother but with single command. Directly behind central command you can see the cross deck lift/conveyor with a double armoured door to either side. Behind those doors will be the main and CIWS gunner stations, as well as the tac bat pilots. This is going to be the next compartment I design and it will be substantially larger than the bridge, as it needs to house two types of big omnidirectional gunner seats/simulators 150 of them or so per side.

That is one seriously cool starship bridge design!

Thanks mate. I like it too, just a shame I never could complete it. The file just got too damn big for my calculator, hehehe

this is amazing, looks like one hell of a command deck

Thank you very very much! I don't get many people who like it. This ship made me cry in the end. It's my biggest ship at 2'4 km in length. Complete overkill in every way, it has 50 or so massive 8-gun turrets. And the hangar bay is 900m long.. on each side of the central deck It would have carried 500 fighters and shuttles maybe even more.
When I did this ship I made a fleet flagship. But it was too damn big to finish properly.

ah theres the thing with 3d modeling, massive size seems like a good idea, but theres so much work involved !

me too, i did a few drum or barrel deep space exploration ships a while ago, was a neat idea but too much work involved

I wish NASA would knock on my door one day and say Here's a 1m diameter fibre optic cable, you get to use our computers, all of them for as long as you need.

that would be sweet, weirdly they give nasa a smaller budget than the tax breaks they give to major religions , if only they would tax some of that and fund NASA with it, maybe we could do some exploring for real

Scifiwarships In reply to chaos-sandwhich [2012-08-24 16:18:48 +0000 UTC]

Wouldn't it.. Yeah, NASA could do with more money. It's the chicken and egg thing again. NASA can't explore space properly because of lack of funds, private investors won't venture into space because NASA hasn't don the research to get them there. In th end it's just a big drain on the economy, but not big enough.
I really hope China and India rekindles the spacerace, because then USA and EU might grow balls enough to want to catch up. (or maybe not the EU since half the union is bankrupt)
Maybe USA and Russia can collaborate, or even join the race as idividuals. That'd be something, maybe EU will join in too, as it can't afford to be left behind.
Wouldn't that be something? a new race between China, India, Russia, USA and EU. Maybe we'd even need battleships. Political shouting, and trade embargoes here on Earth and
battles in space!

would be a sight to see, but alas beyond my lifetime , unless we reach singularity in the next few decades

Okay, maybe not the battles. But we do live in interesting times, and we're not getting fewer so unless someone comes up with Matrix way of stacking people we're slowly forcing ourselves off the planet. I deeply believe we will see the dawn of proper space travel in our lifetime.
The moon is brimming with resources and it's less than a trillion dollars away.

very true, if we keep on expanding as a species we will have to go off world

and of course we know we have to leave eventually , as we will wear out our solar welcome so to speak

I think so, I mean who's going to stop us from growing at an exponential rate? Every natural disaster in the last century however big hasn't manages to kill off more than a few million people at a time. I think we are at a level now where, if a disaster is going to make a dent in the population it will have to be so big that it damn near wipes us out. Nothing that will be big enough to take out half the population is going to stop there, because we're talking nuclear holocaust, or a super volcano like Yellowstone, or a Meteor strike. These are some of the few things that can reduce our numbers in a significant way, and they are global. We are fucking resilient as a race, so in order to survive we'll have to colonize our world. I just hate it when people refer to the human race as Earth. We are a child, and the earth is our cradle, The solar system is the rest of the house. It's big as we look out of the cradle. even bigger when we learn how to crawl, but once we learn how to walk and run it becomes quite small. Then maybe we'll learn that there's a kid living next door, and maybe we'll pull his hair first, or go in and steal his toys..

i like the cradle analogy , ( as a kid i explored, got past childgates, climbed a 6ft fence as a toddler using convenient boxes etc , but some people are content to sit in the cradle and sleep)

Yup I know. I had someone give it a go (the complete hull) with Kerky and the file just crashed it was so big. I plan to make an attempt at this myself, but will have to partition it up something rotten.
The idea is to have an interior section with just enough hull around it to make it look complete. Then take these files and render them properly. Thanks for all the nice comments, it really means a lot.

I just want to see this ship IRL.

I know this is impossible,so let's make it in Virtual Reality.

Thanks man! I'll first try it out in Kerky, it's a money thing. can't afford V-ray just now..

i use the demo myself and just keep renewing it hahahah. from what i can tell it still lets you use the full program. so its cheap

Aha! Good idea, perfect, in fact. Is it very different from kerky? I'm thinking about userfriendlyness, and also does it have an upper limit to the size of the SU files it can render? Most of my starships end up in the 15-18Mb range and are impossible to render in anything other than SU. Will V-ray manage to cope you think?

djomally In reply to Scifiwarships [2011-09-08 06:37:32 +0000 UTC]

sometimes it can be iffy on render speeds but ive never really had a problem rendering an image no matter what size. some just take longer to start but when it does the image gets done quick. i mean like 15 mins at most
ive render one of ur vessel with it, no problem.

as for difficulty using it. it takes a bit to get used to but there are tons of tuts out there

Thanks, mate! I'll give it a shot. Did you render one of my ships you said? which one, and can I please have a look at it? I'd looove to se the result. Well, if you feel like it you can send me some pics on joachimsverd@gmail.com
Again, thanks for valuble advice and comments it makes me want to do better.
