Description Ok, here you go!! The start of me trying to challenge myself with my art! yaaaaayyy. It didn't turn out as well as I would have liked, but it's a start...

This is a scene from my mind... There's an ancient temple which is rarely visited, since few know where it is... If you can make your way past the overgrown vegetation you might find the Pool of Reckoning. This is a dangerous place to be for most people... For those who are completely clear of conscience, they may look into the pool and all they will see is their own reflection. However for those with a burden of guilt, they will be able to see past the surface into the depths of the pool. The more guilt a person carries, the further they can see in, and the pool is truly fathoms deep... Those unlucky enough to see all the way to the bottom will find themselves staring through the water for hours and hours, trapped there and enthralled by what they see. After staring into the depths for what seems like an age, their body will become one of the drops of water that fills the pool, and there they will remain forever...

Yeah.
This was done with watercolours. Time taken: approx 6 hours (more if you include waiting for layers of paint to dry...)

Overall

Vision

Originality

Technique

Impact

First of all, thank you for putting this up. Critic powers, ACTIVATE!!!

The overall vision of a hidden pool serving an unknown purpose is perfectly portrayed in both the picture and the description. That is a rare but very important combination; you have pulled it off perfectly.
The only, and i mean ONLY reason you didn't get a five star rating for originality is because this is so similar to works i've seen before. Of course, I don't like to rate Originality in the first place.
Your technique is pretty fair. It's a little rough, but that can be expected from new experiences and challanges. I think that your stone wall and collum could be better drawn, but your lighting and the reflectivity of the water are gotten down perfectly.
The impact of this was fairly great. You could stare at this for quite some time while wondering where you have seen this place before. When i first saw it, I recognized what i was seeing, even though I had never seen it before. The familiarity of this is what truely gets my full aproval of this astouning devonation.

well, thanks for the critique! ^_^ I was interested to hear that you like the 'familiar' feel it has! haha, although it's a scene created by my mind, I suppose there must be other artists out there who have come up with something similar... But anyway, I appreciate your thoughtful comments, so thankyou!

Familiality is something that comforts many a person in ths hectic world of the unknown.
yes. That is why i hate to judge originality. Two people can have very similar ideas at the same time without knowing of each other. It is very hectic.

This is really nicely done, Silk! I'm quite fond of the way you worked with shadows and light in this, especially on the pillar and the stone wall in the background. The color detail you put into those is really something. You work nicely with watercolors, not to mention with words; the background story really added to the picture. While there are some flaws, such as the perspective, I think this came out very nicely as a challenge for yourself! It's always good to work outside your comfort zone sometimes.

You're very welcome! I think it really is quite nice though, despite some of the flaws. They make it charming. ^^

I was well into the story, when i realized that you said that they will remain forever when their body becomes one of the drops of water. Is it okay with you if i change that in the story?

scilk In reply to Luckysweep [2012-03-20 02:19:39 +0000 UTC]

sure if you like! after all, your story is just inspired by my painting, it doesn't have to be exactly the same

Impressive! The light and shadow would have to be my favourite part, and the ferns and moss are pretty cool too!

As for points for improvement, perspective seems a bit skewed around the top of the pool and the back of the pillar, but if you were just painting from your mind this is pretty understandable. The left edge of the pool also confuses me, it looks like it's set into the ground, while in front and behind the edge seems raised.

As always, wonderful colour. I'm wondering what you think the things you've learnt from this are?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

scilk In reply to banthesun [2012-03-19 21:42:01 +0000 UTC]

thanks!! Yeah I know what you mean about the perspective. Actually I noticed all of those things as I was painting, but my skills are not good enough yet to have fixed them... if you know what I mean? I'll keep working on it! As for what I have learned... it's that I need to work on perspective and lighting!!! ESPECIALLY lighting...

Ah, lovely work. At first I felt very peaceful at looking at it but after I read the story... I have these neat mixed feelings of creepy and relaxing. I mean, I want to look at that pool but now I am also scared. Very cool!

And like always, you are just great with water!

thanks a lot!!! ^_^ I really really love that feeling of slight creepiness some art gives, so I'm happy that I managed to portray that here! Actually I painted it while listening to a creepy song, so I guess it worked, haha!

This is soo lovely! For a second I didnt realise you had painted it because it's a little different from your usual style! Theres so much to take in that I can look at it for ages and see something new each time! I think my favourite part would have to be the top and inside rim of the pool, you have drawn the curves very well! And the dark corner on the left works very well as well! I wonder what I would see if i looked in....

scilk In reply to tritn [2012-03-19 21:39:25 +0000 UTC]

heehee thankssomuch! XD I tried really hard on this one, and it took ages. I don't think the stone wall came out looking as realistic as I wanted, but this is my first attempt at a "real" style so I don't mind. Actually I might have it framed!

tritn In reply to scilk [2012-03-20 01:29:17 +0000 UTC]

Yeah you should frame it! Soo many layers of paint and colours have been put into this, sooo much effort, would be a shame NOT to frame it, hehe XD

There are no words to describe this amazing painting. Oh how i wish that i could Critique it. It would be one of my best rated Critiques i've ever made. Keep making such beutiful paintings. Do you mind if i make a short story based on this picture? I promise to give you credit.

Oh, oh wow, I love the story you had with this. Very eerie. Was this part of a story of yours or is it unattached to anything? When I first saw the picture it seemed fairly plain, but upon reading what you had to say it became more terrifying. I love it!
