i must say your sprite skills are something else, quite impressive.
I am wondering, what program do you use to make these?
My first guess would be Photoshop cs perhaps, but i might be able to see paint, or maybe some program i am less aware of?

Paint to make the sprites, then i use a program called irfanview to convert them to transparent .gif's

You kow, to save yourself time, i believe that if you use a file format for them .tga (Targa file) then it also makes the trasparent backs.

nah, you can use a number of programs.
My personal choice for doing so would be using Microsoft Image composer.
Really simple you just have to save it as a .tga file
